Phyllis Phillips Hicks
SPARTANBURG, SC-- Phyllis Phillips Hicks, 95, wife of the late William Bozemon Hicks, died on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, after a brief illness.
Phyllis, of Bald Creek, NC was born October 3, 1917, to the late Chester Arthur and Bessie Mae King Phillips. She lived most of her married life in Charlotte, NC and Myrtle Beach, SC, and later moved to Spartanburg, SC. Phyllis was the co-owner and operator of The Oakland House Epicurean Catering Inc. with her daughter, Katie. Phyllis was a loving wife, mother, and sister and will always be remembered for her pioneering spirit, commitment to the education of her family, and her witty personality.
She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Kathryn "Katie" Hicks, Professor Emerita of Art at USC Upstate and her husband Dr. Lawrence Roel, MD, PhD of Spartanburg, SC, and Cornelia Hicks Evans, PhD and her husband Ed, MFA of Strasburg, PA; two sisters, Ila McInturff of Signal Mountain, TN, and Margaret Phillips Prosser of Charlotte, NC; one brother, Joseph Lee Phillips of Panama City Beach, FL; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Phyllis is predeceased by a sister, Broma A. Adams of Dothan, AL.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, January 5, 2013, 2:00pm at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
A celebration of Phyllis' life will be held at The Oakland House Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at 6pm.
In remembrance of Phyllis, memorial contributions may be made to the USC Upstate Foundation, P. Kathryn Hicks Arts Fund/Scholarship, 800 University Way, Spartanburg, SC 29303.
