SPARTANBURG, SC-- Tanya P. Burke died June 25, 2012 at Eden Terrace.
Born in Pennsylvania on February 18, 1921, and raised in Detroit, MI, Mrs. Burke moved to California in the 1940s. She worked as a secretary and in the civil service, including a year spent in Guam. She married Henry Earl Burke in 1952, and in the late 50s they moved their young family to her husband's home near Uvalda, GA.
Mrs. Burke was a homemaker and volunteered at the Toombs County Training Center in Lyons, GA, and the Health Department. She attended Smyrna United Methodist Church.
In 1999, Mrs. Burke moved to Spartanburg, SC, where she volunteered at Mobile Meals and attended Fernwood Baptist Church.
Survivors include her son, Nick (Mary Beth) of Fernandina Beach, FL; daughter, Judy Bynum (Brant) of Spartanburg; son, Buddy (Holly) of Walnut Creek, CA; daughter, Tracy Burke of Moore, SC; two granddaughters, Lindsey Burke of Jacksonville, FL, and Nicki Mattox (Josh) of Jacksonville, FL; great-granddaughter, Lexi Mattox; and a number of nieces, nephews, in-laws and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, who died in 1994; her sister Natalie; and her brother Nick, along with her parents, Nikifor and Yelena Potapshyn.
The family will receive friends June 28, 2012 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Mobile Meals, 419 E. Main St., Spartanburg. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Smyrna United Methodist Church in Toombs County, GA, with a reception following the service in the Church Fellowship Hall.
