Wayne Parker Aiken Burdell, 85, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 28, 2013. She was beloved daughter of Effie Williams Parker and Wayne Starr Aiken, MD; youngest sister of Lelia Celeste Tenney and Martha Estelle Pendergrast; devoted wife of Charles Arthur Burdell; loving mother of Charles Arthur Burdell, Jr. & Karen Mobley, Seals Aiken Burdell & Pamela McCurrie, Mary Celeste Burdell & James Tinsley Porter, Jr.; proud grandmother of Christie & Aaron Lines, Julia & Reagan Wolfe, Alexandra Burdell, Parker Burdell, Virginia Porter, and Megan & James Porter, III and doubly blessed great-grandmother of Anna Claire and Eli Lines. She was a kind, gracious and faithful friend to many.
Born January 18, 1928, in Atlanta, she excelled in her athletic endeavors and graduated with honors from Girls High and magna cum laude from Wesleyan College. Primarily a homemaker, she was also founding director at Chapel Woods Presbyterian Preschool and a Bible teacher.
After 24 years in Decatur, GA, she & Charles moved in joyful journey to Spartanburg, SC where he continued his work at Southern Wood Piedmont; both were active in the community and at First Presbyterian Church.
Charles predeceased her on December 12, 1989. Wayne returned to Atlanta in 2007 to be with her children and their families.
Memorial services were held Monday, April 1 at 11a.m. at North Avenue Presbyterian Church with family visitation following.
