Dale Maxwell Evans

SPARTANBURG, SC-- Dale Maxwell Evans, 77, of Spartanburg, SC, died Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at his home. Born February 9, 1937, in Pierce, WV, he was the son of the late Richard and Eva Yankie Evans.
Mr. Evans graduated from Thomas High School in Thomas, WV. He received a BS Degree in Physical Education from West Virginia University in 1961 and MA in Guidance and Counseling in 1962. His teaching and coaching career began in 1962 at Sistersville High School, Sistersville, WV, where his team won the 1964 Class A State Championship. In 1966 he was the coach and Dean of Men at Salem College, Salem, WV and in 1967 he took a position as Head Freshman Football Coach and Academic Counselor for the football team at West Virginia University, Morgantown, WV. He was the Assistant Football Coach and Guidance Counselor for Texas Tech University, Lubbock, TX in 1970. In 1975 he became the Assistant Football Coach at the University of South Carolina in Columbia and went on to be the Defensive Coordinator in 1982 at the University of Colorado, Boulder, CO. In 1983 he was Assistant Football Coach and Staff Liaison to the Atlantic Coast Conference Officials' Association at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His career led him to Dorman High School in 1986 as Head Football Coach until 1992 as well as Athletic Director of Spartanburg County School District Six until his retirement in 2004.
Among many honors and recognitions, he was honored in 1962 at the Mother's Day Sing by the 1928 football team at West Virginia University as the Senior Football player with the highest grade point average; 1987 Spartanburg Herald Journal Football Coach of the Year; 1989 South Carolina Officials' Association Football Coach of the Year; 1989 Assistant Football Coach Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas; 1994-1995 South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association Athletic Director of the Year; 2003 Charles Stuart Athletic Administrator of the Year Award presented by the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association; 2003-2004 South Carolina Athletic Administrators Association 4A Athletic Director of the Year; 2003-2004 National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association Award of Merit for South Carolina; 2004 Dorman High School True Blue Cavalier Award; 2006 Distinguished Service Award from the South Carolina Football Coaches Association; 2009-2010 Tallulah and Keith Richardson Distinguished Service Award presented by the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association; 2012 inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Administrators' Association Hall of Fame.
Mr. Evans served on the Board of Directors of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association from 1989-2003 and was president of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association 1999-2000. He was a volunteer for Mobile Meals, has served on the Spartanburg School District Six Board of Trustees from 2005-present, and was a veteran of the U. S. Air Force 1954-1958.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 55 years, Joann Louise Carr Evans; children, Kelly Evans and his wife Kim of Lexington, SC, Tracey Evans and his wife Sheila of Greenville, SC; grandchildren, Wyatt Dale Evans and Blythe Franklin Evans; and brother, Williams Evans of Orlando, FL. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Betty Romanick; brothers, Eugene Evans, Richard Evans, and Jack Evans; and beloved Wheaten Terrier, Doak.
A memorial service honoring his contributions will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, May 10, 2014, at Dorman High School, 1050 Cavalier Way, Roebuck, SC 29376.
A private Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at the Catholic Church of Jesus Our Risen Savior. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Heritage Chapel Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Coach Dale Evans Scholarship Fund, c/o Dorman All Sport Booster Club, 1050 Cavalier Way, Roebuck, SC 29376.
