George Evans Mitchell|
SPARTANBURG, SC-- George Evans Mitchell, 77, husband of Cabell Carrington Mitchell, died of lung cancer on Tuesday, May 22, 2012. Mr. Mitchell was born in Spartanburg on December 31, 1934, son of the late Richard Leinster Mitchell and Georgia Anna Evans Mitchell.
Mr. Mitchell graduated from The Lawrenceville School in Princeton, NJ and the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (A.B., J.D.). He served as CEO and House Counsel for his family's business, Spartan Petroleum Co., for most of his working life. In addition, he worked in administration and development for University of South Carolina Upstate, the Carolina Piedmont Foundation.
A devoted member of the Episcopal Church of the Advent, he served as Junior Warden, on the Vestry, and on the Church of the Advent Foundation. He also enjoyed singing as part of the St. Cecilia Choir.
Mr. Mitchell's community was very important to him, as he served on and participated in several boards and organizations, including: the Piedmont Club (past Chair), Spartanburg Cotillion Club, Civil Domestic Violence Board, South Carolina Bar, Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community (past Chair), Carolina Piedmont Foundation (past Chair), MUSC Board of Visitors, Spartanburg Little Theater, Spartanburg Youth Theater, Spartanburg Music Foundation, Spartanburg Arts Counsel, Spartanburg Art Museum, Spartanburg Ballet Guild, Civitan Club, and the Spartanburg Day School.
As an avid wine and food enthusiast, he enjoyed being a member of the Spartanburg Bailliage of Chaine des Rotisseurs, PC3, and several wonderful supper clubs.
In addition to his beloved wife, he is survived by his children, Georgia Anna Mitchell (J Scott Shirley), Helen Elizabeth Mitchell, and Stephen Carrington Mitchell (DuPre Wells Mitchell); and three grandchildren, Stephen Carrington Mitchell, Jr., Edward Buist Mitchell, and George Wells Mitchell. He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Evans Mitchell.
Funeral services will be held in Spartanburg at 1:00 PM Today, Friday, May 25, 2012, at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, 141 Advent Street. Interment will be in the Episcopal Church of the Advent Cleveland Bell Tower Columbarium.
