Geraldine C. Atkins
ROEBUCK-- Geraldine Cooper Atkins, 97, formerly of 1530 Morris Bridge Road and a resident of Woodruff Manor since 2011, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014.
A native of Madison, Georgia, she was born May 12, 1916 to the late James McLeaster and Annie Agnes Rose Cooper. Her friends knew her as "Jerry." She and her husband, J.S., were members of the First Baptist Church of Woodruff, since moving to South Carolina in 1992. Previously, she resided in South Florida, where her husband was employed by the U.S. Sugar Corporation as a commissary manager. She worked part time in the store and raised two children, Dick and Ann. Jerry was a leader among the church's women at the local Baptist church of Canal Point, Florida. She held several offices in the Women's Missionary Union, and at various times taught classes to youth and to women. She was a wonderful cook, had good taste in home décor and besides housework, Jerry liked being outside with her yard full of tropical plants and flowers that were the envy of the neighborhood.
During the Second World War, she took over as commissary manager when J.S. was assigned to provision the mess halls of ten sugar plantations, and she was extended in that position when J.S. hurt his back on the job. A few years after their retirement, they decided to relocate to South Carolina to be near their daughter, Ann, who is a nurse. Jerry lost her husband, J.S., in 1999.
Surviving are a son, Richard, and a daughter, Ann. Richard and his wife Merilyn have five children. Their son Lee, with wife Nancy, has three children, Kristin, Ricky and Daniel. Son, Laird, with his wife Sheryl, has two children, Camille (married to Joshua Plant) and Jaimee. Son, Joel, with wife Rhonda, has two step-children, Matthew and Jerissa. Daughter, Cristi, with husband Paul, has two children, Sam and Meri. And a daughter, Amy, with husband, David has three children, Grant, Davis and Jessie. All of the family lives in Florida, except for Joel, who lives in Nashville, Tenn. Geraldine's daughter Ann and her husband Gary Shelby have three children, Martha Ann, Rebecca and Darby. Martha Ann with her husband Tommy Jolly has three children, Patricia (spouse, Peter Wayne Peterson), Leah (spouse, Paul Woody), and Lacey (spouse, Travis Perry). Rebecca with her husband Mark Hoover, has two children, Thomas and Alden. They are all living in South Carolina.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 10 a.m. at Lanford-Gwinn Mortuary Chapel in Woodruff by the Rev. Andrew Shull. Interment will follow in Heritage Memorial Gardens, Roebuck.
Visitation will be held from 9:00-9:45 A.M. prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Woodruff, 801 Cross Anchor Road, Woodruff, S.C. 29388.
The family is at their respective homes.
