GREENVILLE, SC-- Elmer Maurice Atkins, 90, formerly of 8 Ridgewood Drive, died Saturday, October 6, 2012, at Sterling House of Greer.
A native of Spartanburg County, son of the late Stanley and Effie Van Patton Atkins, he was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII, a retired employee of Norfolk-Southern Railroad after 34 years of service and a member of Hampton Heights Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Caring and Sharing BFG and the UTU. Mr. Atkins was known as the toy man and for making little wooden toys for needy children around the world.
Surviving are his wife, Iona Sloan Atkins of Greer; a son and daughter-in-law, Jackie and Elizabeth Atkins of Greer; a daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and David Rankin of Anderson; one brother, Olin Atkins of Duncan; two grandchildren, Larry Thompson and his wife, Kim of Charlotte and Laura Lee Thompson of Anderson; and five great-grandchildren, Jacob, Nina, Paul, Katelyn and Tyler.
Mr. Atkins was predeceased by two brothers, Bobby Atkins and T.Q. Atkins.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 p.m. Monday, October 8 at The Wood Mortuary, conducted by Rev. Larry Carter and Rev. Wayne Cole. Burial will follow in Wood Memorial Park.
Visitation will be held 1:30-2:30 p.m. Monday at The Wood Mortuary.
The family is at the home of his son, Jackie Atkins, 140 Rubiwood Circle, Greer.
