WOODRUFF, SC-- SMSGT Paul Vernon Bell, 75, of 470 Wedgewood Drive, passed away Monday, December 14, 2009, at Spartanburg Regional Gibbs Oncology Center.
A native of Reidville Township, he was born September 13, 1934, to the late Paul B. and Annie Mae Emory Bell. He was the widower of Dorothy J. Lowell Bell his loving wife of 45 years.
A graduate of Woodruff High School, he also held a college level GED. SMSGT Bell began his military career in September 1956 in the United States Air Force where he served until his honorable discharge in March 1965. He then enlisted in the Air Force Reserves where he served from April 1972 until June 1973. He served in the SC Air National Guard at McEntire ANG Base from June 1973 until his retirement in September 1994. SMSGT Bell was a proud veteran of Operation Desert Shield/Storm.
After his military retirement, Paul Vernon entered politics where he served on the Woodruff City Council from May 2003 until November 2004. He was then elected Mayor of Woodruff, serving from November 2004 until November 2008. He was previous Chairman and a current member of the Planning Commission.
Mr. Bell is survived by his sons, Larry Letourneau of Waterloo, Jeff and Ron Bell, both of Woodruff; daughters, Susan Hellams of Woodruff, Ginger Byrd of Simpsonville, Peggy Redding of Travelers Rest, Paula Capps of Spartanburg and Jennifer Bell of Woodruff. Paul Vernon is also survived by his grandchildren who knew him as "Poppa Bell", which include his grandsons, Clint Letourneau of Enoree, Curt Letourneau of Atlanta, GA, Brian Hellams of Woodruff, Michael Binkley of Simpsonville, Chris Redding of Marietta and Ronald Bell of Woodruff; granddaughters, Michelle and Jessica Binkley of Simpsonville, Kristle Casey of Spartanburg and Leah Bell of Woodruff. Also surviving are great-grandsons, Casey Letourneau of Enoree, Kyle and Joshua Hellams of Woodruff, Jacob and Austin Redding of Marietta and Cayden Casey-Pintoff of Spartanburg; great-granddaughters, Abbigail Strange of Simpsonville and Magnolia Casey-Pintoff of Spartanburg; and one great-great-grandson, Corey Hellams of Woodruff. There were many other children that knew and loved "Poppa Bell". Mr. Bell is also survived by two brothers, Freddie Bell of Greer and Donnie Bell of Woodruff; and one sister, Martha Ann Hourihan of Clover. He was predeceased by a grandson, Corey Hellams; two brothers, Larry Dean Bell and Harry Kenneth Bell; and a sister, Doris Rebecca Bell.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, December 17, 2009, at 2:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Woodruff by the Rev. Charles Foster, Rev. Carlos Watson, Mr. Scott Slatton and CMSGT. Tim Treaster. Interment with full military honors rendered by the United States Air force Honor Guard will follow in Greenhaven Memorial Gardens, 12795 Hwy. 221. Woodruff.
Visitation will be held tonight, Wednesday, December 16, 2009, from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Lanford Funeral Home, 257 North Main Street, Woodruff.

The family is at the residence, 470 Wedgewood Drive, Woodruff.
