GAFFNEY, SC-- Joe Max Clary, Sr., 92, of 402 E. Buford Street, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 25, 2012, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home.
Born in Gaffney, he was the husband of Ramona Daniel Clary and first married to the late Hazel Beck Clary and the son of the late Drayton M. Clary Sr. and Lucy Edna Elmore Clary. He was a World War II United States Army Veteran, having served under General George C. Patton in the European Theatre. Mr. Clary was a recipient of The Purple Heart. He was part owner/operator of Superior Laundry. He served the United States Postal Service for 44 years as a rural mail carrier, and was a member of the Lions Club. Mr. Clary was a lifelong member of First Baptist Church, where he was a choir member and a Life Deacon.
In addition to his wife, also surviving are a son, Joe Max Clary Jr. of Mauldin; two daughters, Becky McCulloch and husband, Jere of Gaffney and Mary Jane Swindler and husband, David of Spartanburg; four grandchildren, Mary Cameron McCulloch Crow and husband, Kevin, Jere McCulloch Jr., Matthew Swindler and Clay Swindler and wife, Tiffany; two great-grandchildren, Annalise Crow and Emery Crow; a step-son, Edward Gault and wife, Kay of Gaffney; a step-daughter, Mona Gault of Asheville; and two step-grandchildren, Richard Gault and Rachel Simpson. Mr. Clary was preceded in death by two brothers, Drayton Clary Jr. and Dean Clary; and two sisters, Rizpah Clary and Mary Edna Clary.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 PM on Tuesday, February 28, 2012, at Blakely Funeral Home. Funeral services will immediately follow at 2:00 PM in the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joel Sellers and Dr. M.B. Morrow Jr. officiating.
