Jerome E. McDowell

INMAN, SC-- Jerome Elmore McDowell, 92, of Inman, died Monday, April 9, 2012, at his home surrounded by his family. Born December 6, 1919, in Spartanburg, he was the son of the late Claude Elmore and Louella Ramsey McDowell.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 68 years, Thelma Quinton McDowell; daughter, Sue Hill and husband Larry A. of Norris, TN; step granddaughters, Tara Hill and husband Mark Huffman, and Meghan Hill; step grandson, Sean Hill; step great-grandson, Elijah Huffman; beloved brother, August McDowell of Chesnee; and 15 wonderful nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Lamar McDowell and Carl McDowell.
Mr. McDowell was a retired railroad carman for Norfolk Southern. He was a member of First Baptist Church North Spartanburg. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he participated in the invasion of Okinawa as a coxswain on LCT 1392.
Visitation will be 1:00-2:45 PM Saturday, April 14, 2012, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 PM in the Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Al Phillips and the Rev. Tommy Lee. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice Special Needs Fund, 120 Heywood Avenue, Suite 300, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
