SPARTANBURG SC-- Benjamin Robinson Pickens, Jr., died on Sunday, April 22, 2012, at home. Born April 29, 1944, in Newberry, SC, he was the son of the late Laura Nance (McCaughrin) and Benjamin Robinson Pickens. Ben is survived by his wife of 43 years, Diane Vermillion Pickens.
Mr. Pickens, a former Deacon and Elder of First Presbyterian Church of Spartanburg, graduated from Spartanburg High School, Class of 1962, and Presbyterian College, a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. He held the position of Vice-president and Treasurer of Pickens Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc., a family owned and operated company. Ben also served on the Board of Directors of the National Roofing Contractors Association, past President of the Carolina's Roofing and Sheet Metal Contractors Association, Inc., and Chairman of the CRSMC Self-insurers Workmen's Compensation Board. Commissioned in the United States Army, he earned the rank of Captain and received the following commendations: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
Survivors include a son, Benjamin Robinson Pickens III and his wife, Melissa, of Spartanburg; three daughters, Miriam Brown Pickens (Mimi) of Charlotte, NC, Margaret Pickens Clayton (Meg) and husband, Harry, of Spartanburg, and Mary Pickens DuPree and her husband, Bern, of Greenville, SC; eight grandchildren, Benjamin IV, Charles, William, and Laura Nance Pickens, Sophie, McCaughrin (Mac), and Harry Clayton, and Frank DuPree III. Also surviving are a brother, James McCaughrin Pickens and his wife, Ange, of Spartanburg, SC; and a sister, Laura Pickens Wagner (Sandy) and husband, Paul, of Atlanta, GA.
The Celebration of Life service will be held at 4:00 PM, Tuesday, April 24, 2012, in the sanctuary of First Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg, SC, conducted by The Reverend Ansley Page and Dr. William L. Arthur. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with Military Honors prior to funeral service.
Pallbearers are: Mr. Stewart Heath Johnson, Mr. Stewart Heath Johnson, Jr., Mr. James Drayton Nance Pickens, Mr. Robert Wise Pickens, Mr. Heyward Savage Edmunds, Mr. Walter Blakely Todd, Jr., Mr. Robert Olin Pickens III, and Mr. William Astor Blackwood, Jr.; and honorary pallbearers are the Deacons and Elders of First Presbyterian Church and special friends - Mr. Joseph Bascombe Traywick II, Mr. James William Seeley, Mr. James David McCutchen, Jr., and Mr. Harry Price Gray.
The family will receive visitors at the home.
