James "Jim" H. Hendrix
SPARTANBURG, SC-- James "Jim" Harold Hendrix, 92, of Spartanburg, died Sunday, June 24, 2012, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born March 20, 1920, in Newberry County, SC, he was the widower of Dorothy Carpenter Hendrix and son of the late Leo and Grace Morris Hendrix. Mr. Hendrix was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church for over 50 years where he was a member of the Loyalty Sunday School Class. He retired as District Superintendent of Schools in South Carolina after 37 years of service, including nine years as Superintendent in Lockhart, SC, and 28 years as Superintendent in Spartanburg County School District 2. Jim was a past president of Union County Education Association, past president Spartanburg County Education Association, past president SC Association of School Superintendents, past president of Kiwanis Club, a Mason at the Boiling Springs Lodge, and served on the Board of Directors for SC Teachers Association. His academic accomplishments include receiving a B. S. degree from Newberry College, M.A. degree from Columbia University, M.Ed. and Ed. S. degrees from the University of South Carolina. A devoted family man, he was a lifelong lover of American history, and avid supporter of public education and especially Spartanburg County School District 2. In 1969, Jim was privileged to have an elementary school named in his honor, the James H. Hendrix Elementary School. Survivors include son, Don Hendrix and wife Susan; daughter-in-law, Patricia Attaway Hendrix; grandchildren, Ashley Hendrix McCrory and husband Mike, Amanda Hendrix Bunce and husband Stephen, all of Spartanburg, and James Harold Hendrix, III and wife Kimberly of Shelby, NC; great-grandchildren, Canaan James Hendrix, Colton Bowman, Charles Hendrix McCrory, and Walker Patrick McCrory. He was predeceased by a son, James H. Hendrix, Jr. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 PM Tuesday, June 26, 2012, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at Bethel United Methodist Church, by the Rev. David E. Nichols and the Rev. David B. Smith. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, 245 S. Church Street, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
