Vernon K. Davis
GREER, SC-- Vernon Kendrick Davis, 93, died peacefully, with his daughter by his side, at 1:38 p.m. on Thursday, June 28, 2012, at his beloved home.
Born on May 30, 1919, in Spartanburg County, "Flatwood Community," he was the son of the late Eddie League and Lula Burnett Davis. He attended Duncan School and was a Technical school graduate. Mr. Davis was retired from Lyman Printing and Finishing and was inducted into the 30 year club in 1969. He then completed the Greenville-Spartanburg Airport Security Program as Lieutenant in October of 1979. In later years, he and his wife worked for Hertz Rental at GSP Airport. He farmed his land raising Black Angus cattle. He was a lifelong member of Sharon United Methodist Church. He was a very respected member of the community and was very devoted to his family. As an avid Clemson Tiger and Yankee fan, he spent many hours watching and enjoying games.
Mr. Davis is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Evelyn Brockman Davis; his two sisters, Lucille Johnson and Ruby Satterfield; and six brothers, Theron, Paul, Marchant, Homer, Wilton and League Davis, Jr. He was the oldest living and last member of the Davis family with three brothers and one sister older and three brothers and one sister younger.
Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Teresa and Tommy Allen and Melesa and Randy Shuler; grandchildren, Jennifer Allen Harrison and husband Travis, Brock Allen, Sabrina Shuler Brackett and husband Jeffrey and Zeke Shuler; four great-grandchildren, Karsyn Harrison, Katelynne Harrison, Kaden Harrison and Presley Allen.
After his wife left to be with the Lord in 2008, "Pop" thrived for four additional years in great part to the energy of his great-grandson, Kaden, whom he called "Little Man". He enjoyed his company, watching cartoons, playing games and rocking him in his chair. There was no doubt they had a "special bond".
Mr. Davis' eldest daughter Teresa and her husband lived with him as full-time caregivers for the last three months and never left his side. They greatly appreciate the loving care of the nurses of Spartanburg Regional Hospice who made his last days comfortable, peaceful and filled with happy memories.
Visitation will be held at Sharon United Methodist Church, Sharon Church Road, in Greer, on Sunday, July 1st at 4:00 p.m. until 4:45 p.m. with the service starting at 5:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Matthew Yon and Rev. Sam Davis. Due to the extreme heat, the graveside service will be private.
Pallbearers will be Phil Davis, Dean Davis, David Davis, Larry Art Davis, Tommy Satterfield, and Frankie Powers.
The families are in their respective homes.
The family respectfully request that memorials be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice, 120 Heywood Avenue, Suite 300, Spartanburg, SC 29302 or Sharon United Methodist Church Building Fund, in his honor, P.O. Box 418, Reidville, SC 29375.
