SPARTANBURG, SC-- William Harold Hambrick, 85, died at his home Wednesday October 3, 2012.
Mr. Hambrick was born Dec. 26, 1926 in Spartanburg to the late Andrew Jackson and Irene Westmoreland Hambrick. His family moved to Athens, GA for 3 years and then returned to Spartanburg where Bill finished Spartanburg High School in 1944. Mr. Hambrick graduated from Wofford College in 1949 after serving his country in the Merchant Marines. While at Wofford he played basketball and baseball.
He was married to the late Alice Ruth Clement Hambrick for 50 years. Mr. Hambrick began working at Clement Lumber in 1947 and became its President in 1965.
Bill served on the boards of Carolina Southern Bank and First Piedmont Federal Savings and Loan. Bill was a devoted alumni and supporter of Wofford College. He served on the Board of Trustees and also as Chairman of the Annual Fund. He never missed a football or basketball game while in good health. Wofford College presented the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award to Mr. Hambrick in 1989.
Mr. Hambrick was a charter member of St. Christopher Episcopal Church and later joined Calvary Episcopal Church in Glenn Springs. He designed and built the Lich Gate at Calvary. He served on the vestry while at Calvary. During this time he moved and restored the historic Glenn Springs Post Office.
Among his favorite activities was to attend the Walter Wright Coffee Club every Wednesday at the Simple Simon.
Mr. Hambrick is survived by two daughters, Loraine Harrell (Billy), and Billie McConnell (Joe); two grandsons, Will Adams (Ginny) and Carter Harrell (Shanna); and two great grandchildren, Aayden Harrell, and Izabella Adams and Carolyn Pennell. Also surviving are Carolyn Pennell, his sister, Jean Bishop of Athens, GA and his brother, Jack Hambrick of Spartanburg.
He was preceded in death by his brother, J. Reid Hambrick.
The family would like to express its deep appreciation to his caregivers, Dr. Daniel Meetze, Dr. Tom Collings, Judy Cantrell, Amy Smith, Deborah Gore and Hospice of Spartanburg Regional.
Graveside services will be at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens on Friday, Oct. 5, 2012 at 11:30 am. The service will be conducted by Chaplin Gary Jordan. The family will receive friends at the graveside following the service.

Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29303, Spartanburg High School Scholarship Fund Class of 1944, Care of Spartanburg County Foundation, 424 E. The family will be at the home, 13 Springdale Lane, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
