MATTHEWS, NC-- Stan Sewell, 57, went home to his heavenly father on November 8, 2012 after battling pancreatic cancer. A memorial service celebrating Stan's life will be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, November 17, 2012 at Christ Covenant Church, 800 Fullwood Ln., Matthews, NC 28105 with Dr. Mike Ross officiating.
Stan graduated from Wofford College in 1977 where he served as President of Student Government and was a member of both Sigma Nu fraternity and Blue Key Leadership Society. He began his career as a Human Resources Director with Cone Mills in Union, SC, and later joined Wrenn Handling in Charlotte which was later acquired by Barlow Handling, the Southeastern dealer for Hyster. Over his 23 year career with Barlow, he held roles in H.R., sales management and more recently as the Company President from 1999-2008. Stan finished his career as COO for Nauman Hobbs Material Handling in Phoenix, AZ.
Stan served on various boards and advisory groups including The American Red Cross, United Way, Wofford Alumni, Material Handling Equipment Dealers Assoc. and Carolina Tractor Advisory Group. He was a member of Christ Covenant Church where he served as a deacon and small group facilitator.
While Stan enjoyed golf, tennis, cycling and reading, he most loved traveling with his family to the lake, the Carolina Coast, and out West to ski. His faith and love of family will be what is remembered most.
Stan is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Lynn Jolly Sewell; a son, Travis Stanley Sewell of Atlanta, GA; two daughters Carly Pope Sewell and Emily Ross Sewell, both of Matthews, NC. He is also survived by his parents, Carl and Mary Ann Sewell of Evans, GA; a brother Scott Sewell and his wife Lori of Evans, GA; and a sister-in-law, Connie Sewell of Senoia, GA. He was survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
Stan was preceded in death by a son, Derek Raleigh Sewell; and a brother, Ken T. Sewell.
The family will receive friends in a reception at the church immediately following the memorial service.
