James William Rankin, Jr.

SPARTANBURG, SC-- James William Rankin, Jr., 90, formerly of 113 Fernridge Dr., Spartanburg, SC, died Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home. He was born in Uxbridge, MA, on December 25, 1923, to the late James William Rankin, Sr. and Mabel Snowling Rankin, and was married to the late Dorothy Hill Rankin for 59 years.
A U. S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Rankin served in Anzio, Italy and received many honorable medals, including the Purple Heart, for his service. Upon his return to Uxbridge, he continued his schooling and went to work at Draper Textiles in Hopedale, MA. He then transferred to Spartanburg in 1963 with Draper Textiles until his retirement and then continued in his career as a consultant for Singer Corporation. He was an avid golfer and was of the Catholic faith.
Survivors include his son, Kenneth Hill Rankin and his wife Isaaileen Rankin of Inman, SC; three granddaughters, Michelle Rankin Pemberton and Margaret Rankin Proctor and her husband Rich Proctor, all of Spartanburg, SC, and Carmen Rankin Davis (daughter of the late John "Koon" Rankin) and her husband Nick Davis of Roebuck, SC; two great-grandsons, Clayton Hill Shirley and James Hampton Rankin Proctor, both of Spartanburg, SC; and a great-granddaughter, Ava Davis of Roebuck, SC. In addition to his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a son, John William Rankin; son-in-law, Louis Wayne Pemberton in November 2013; a sister, Lois Cox; and a brother, Donald Rankin.
A Celebration of Life service will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, February 7, 2014, at Floyd's Greenlawn Chapel, 2075 E. Main St., Spartanburg, SC 29307, by Father Michael F. McCafferty of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church-Gaffney. Burial, with military rites by the Fort Jackson U. S. Army Honor Guard, will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 1300 Fernwood-Glendale Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29307. The family will receive friends following the service at the graveside.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home, 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29303; or the Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675.
The family would like to thank the physicians and staff of Spartanburg Regional Hospice Home for their loving care. The family would also like to thank the staff and residents of Windsor House for sharing their love, care, and many memorable moments as his extended family.
