Bessie Sawyer Young
SPARTANBURG, SC- Mrs. Bessie Sawyer Young, 83, peacefully entered rest on April 4, 2014 at the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Willie Burrell Sawyer and the widower of Louis W. Young. Bessie Sawyer Young was born on April 9, 1932 in Fairfield County, S.C., the last survivor of her immediate family. At an early age, she joined and was baptized at the First Baptist Church, Fairforest. Mrs. Young later joined Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church where she sang in the Senior Choir and was member of the Missionary Society. She was a member of Wards II and IV.
Bessie Sawyer Young was a 1947 graduate of Lincoln High School. She loved and studied music, especially the piano. She also loved fashion and design.
She was a Certified Nursing Assistant having attended Daniel Morgan Vocational School.
Left to cherish fond and loving memories are her two daughters, Carrie Young Steele and Sandra (Larry) Young Johnson, Spartanburg; two sons, the Rev. Lewis W. (Doris) Young, Jr., Los Angeles, and James L. Young, Spartanburg; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Ronnie W. Young, and her daughter and son-in-law, Shirley A. Young and Joseph Van Morris.
A Celebration of the Life of Mrs. Bessie S. Young will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, April 13, 2014 at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. M. Keith McDaniel, Sr., will officiate. Interment will be held at Lincoln Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughters: Sandra Young Johnson, 114 Austin St., Spartanburg, SC 29306; and Carrie Young Steele, 353 Amherst Drive, Spartanburg, SC 29306.
