LANDRUM, SC-- Joseph L. Humphries, 74, of 505 Forest Avenue, passed away Thursday, April 30, 2009 at his home. He was the son of the late W.E. and Eunice Wilson Humphries and husband of Elizabeth "Lib" Blackwood Humphries.
He was a member of Landrum First Baptist Church and the Landrum Fire Department where he was a dedicated firefighter for 37 years. He had served as officer, captain, Chief and Assistant Chief and was a member of the Spartanburg County Firefighters Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the Landrum Masonic Lodge.
He was employed by Community Cash for 47 years and was the manager of the Landrum Store for many years and later worked at Petty Funeral Home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Scott Humphries and wife Danna of Landrum, and David Humphries of Chicago, IL; a daughter, Jan Horton and husband Dennis of Landrum; three brothers, Bill, Jimmy, and Jerry Humphries all of Spartanburg, SC; two sisters, Kay Alexander of Fairforest, SC, and Florence Fringes of Columbia, SC; five grandchildren, Erin McNeill and husband Chad of Campobello, SC; Justin, Jared and Holly Horton of Landrum, and Marly Humphries of Landrum; and a great-granddaughter, Ansley McNeill of Campobello. He was predeceased by a son, Michael Humphries.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, May 1, 2009 at Petty Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Landrum First Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Andy Allen and Rev. Jimmy Camp. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Joe Williams, Dever Little, Jim Syfert, Mike Pearson, Joe Kelly, Jack Pruitt and Bill Johnson.
Honorary pallbearers will be the Landrum Fire Department and the Cliff Walden Sunday School Class.
The family is at the home.
