SPARTANBURG, SC-- Belva Brooks Inman Clarkson, 91, widow of Thomas Bowen Clarkson, Jr., passed away peacefully, with all of her children surrounding her, on Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at White Oak Estates in Spartanburg.
Born in Newport News, Virginia on December 5, 1918, she formerly lived in the Clarkson family home at 353 College Drive in Gaffney. She was the daughter of the late Glenn Gardner Inman and Belle Humphries Inman. Mrs. Clarkson attended Lander and Limestone Colleges, and taught school in Cherokee County prior to her marriage. She also was a social worker at the Welfare Department, now the Department of Social Services. A member of First Baptist Church in Gaffney for 66 years, she served a year as WMU President and secretary of her Sunday School Department. Mrs. Clarkson was well-known as an excellent cook, seamstress and homemaker.
A devoted wife and mother, who raised their five children alone after her dear husband Tom died suddenly in 1964, she is survived by two daughters, Nancy Clarkson Fowler and husband, Dennis of Gaffney and Carol Clarkson Fritz of Steamboat Springs, CO; two sons, William Gordon Clarkson and wife, Lisa of Gaffney and Richard Crosby Clarkson of Oakland, OR; and a sister, Mary Inman Bishop of Kansas City, MO. Other survivors include granddaughter, Paula Clarkson Twigg of Summerville, SC; step-granddaughter, Leslie Barbour Lee of Fountain Inn, SC; grandsons, Casey Clarkson Fowler of Gaffney, Cameron Clarkson Fritz and Cody Bowen Fritz, both of Boulder CO; two great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren, a number of nieces and nephews; and devoted friend, Gelola Jefferies.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a son, Thomas Bowen Clarkson, III; a sister, Jean Inman Sarratt; and an infant brother, Glenn Gardner Inman, Jr.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, March 26, 2010, at Oakland Cemetery in Gaffney with Rev. Joel Sellers officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the home of Dennis & Nancy Clarkson Fowler.
