GAFFNEY, SC-- Lifelong Gaffney resident, Miriam Yvonne Phillips, died at her home Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at age 72, after a courageous battle with cancer. Miriam was born September 22, 1939, to William and Daisy Bland. She attended Gaffney High School, graduating in 1957 and then attended Winthrop and Gardner-Webb Universities. She later received a degree in early childhood education from the University of South Carolina Upstate and taught at Blacksburg Elementary and Alma Elementary schools.
She married Gene E. Phillips, also of Gaffney, in 1960. They lived in Blacksburg, VA before settling down in Gaffney and having three sons, who now live in Dallas, TX. Miriam was a devoted mother and in her early life directed much of her time and energy to raising her three sons.
Later in life, she was an avid reader and aspiring bridge player. Miriam loved trips to the South Carolina coast. Always inseparable from her little sister, she shared many a trip with "BJ" to Litchfield Beach and Fripp Island.
Miriam was a devout Christian and attended several churches over time including Beaver Dam Baptist Church, Westside Baptist Church and Northside Baptist Church in Spartanburg. Later in life she was an active member of the Cherokee Avenue Baptist Church.
Miriam was preceded in death by her father, A. W. Bland; mother, Daisy Bland; and sister, Imogene Austell. She is survived by her brother, Maynard Bland of Fountain Inn; sister, Bertha Jane Brannon of Gaffney; brother, Edward Bland of Anderson; three sons, Bradford, Ryan and Clifton Phillips of Dallas, TX and four beautiful grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are through Blakely Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday, May 5, 2912, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 6, 2012, at 2 o'clock in the Blakely Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Clyde Thomas officiating. Interment will be in the Grassy Pond Baptist Church Cemetery.
