Bessie Mae Davis Ferguson
SPARTANBURG, SC-- Mrs. Bessie Mae Davis Ferguson entered into peaceful rest on Sunday, January 12, 2014, Born in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Willie Davis, Sr. and Maggie Crumpton Davis and the widow of George T. Ferguson.
Bessie Mae was a member of Stephen Grove A.M.E. Zion Church for more than 60 years; she later joined Silver Hill Memorial United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Ferguson was a graduate of Lincoln High School, Class of 1959.
After working at Spartanburg General Hospital briefly, she worked for Butte Knitting until the company closed in 1981. She was subsequently employed with Alloyd of Spartanburg.
Bessie Mae loved and cherished her family; she was the "glue". Family members and friends knew that they could call on her to listen and to help. She always made you feel proud of your accomplishments. Her favorite things to do included: spending time with her sisters and other family members on Howard Street; hosting the 4th of July gatherings; and taking Carnival Cruises with her family and friends.
Bessie Mae leaves her loving family to cherish fond memories: her daughter, Felicia Ann Ferguson (Jonathan) Hill; her son, George Anthony Ferguson; her beloved grandchildren, the "apple of her eye", Felicia Jonay Hill, Jonathan F. Hill, Jr. and Malcolm J. Hill; her sisters, Mrs. Janie Clowney, Mrs. Rubye (Robert) Smith, Mrs. Ruth Hardy, Mrs. Genovia (Charles) Dawkins and Mrs. Frances (Robert) Griffin; her brothers, James (Bessie) Davis, Willie (Annie Lee) Davis; her sister-in-law, Mrs. Juanita Davis: a host of nieces and nephews and other dear relatives; and her treasured friends of 22 years, Jan and Larry Goldstein.
Mrs. Ferguson was preceded in death by: siblings, Roosevelt Davis, Clarence Davis, Mrs. Sallie Lee Rice, Mrs. Margie Brown and Mrs. Thelma Jones; brothers-in-law, Leon Clowney, Robert Hardy, Sr. and Albert Brown, Sr.
Visitation will be held on Friday evening, January 17, 2014 at the John Stinson Woodward Memorial Chapel from 7:00-8:00p.m.
A Celebration of Life for Mrs. Bessie Mae Davis Ferguson will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Silver Hill Memorial United Methodist Church at 2:00 p.m. Reverend Dr. Eddie C. Williams, Reverend Vernell Stukes and Reverend J. R. Williams will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the home, 103 Woodride Court, Spartanburg, SC.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Center of Hope, Silver Hill Memorial United Methodist Church, 778 John B. White, Sr. Blvd., Spartanburg, SC 29306.
