WOODRUFF, SC-- Johnnie Bennett Sexton, 89, of 506 Cross Anchor Road died Friday, January 24, 2014 at Magnolia Place.
A native of Reidville, SC, he was born February 29, 1924 to the late William Henry and Lucretia Bennett Sexton and was the widower of his wife of 50 years, Murtice Bragg Sexton. He was a member of Emma Gray Memorial United Methodist Church where he held numerous positions and was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1942-1946. Mr. Sexton was a graduate of Reidville High School and Spencer School of Watchmaking. He was owner and watchmaker of Sexton's Jewelers formerly in Woodruff for 47 years. He was past president of the SC Jewelers Association, Past President of SC Watchmakers Association and the past president of the Woodruff Jaycees. Mr. Sexton was former secretary of the Woodruff Area Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Woodruff Merchants Association. He served as a member of the board of Spartanburg County School District Four for twelve years. He was a member of the SC Children's Foster Care Review Bard, member of the Woodruff Housing Authority and founding member of Three Pines Country Club and held a Sublime Degree of Master Mason and was a lifetime member of Bethel Masonic Lodge #112.
Surviving are two daughters, Ellen Bailey and her husband, William of Irmo, SC and Tammy McIntyre and her husband, Eric of Columbus, NC; sister, Delia Lamb of Reidville; three grandsons, Jonathan Bailey and his wife, Crystal of New Orleans, LA; Jason Bailey of Columbia, MD, Russell McIntyre of Chapel Hill, NC and he is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five brothers, Roy Sexton, William Sexton, Samuel Sexton, David Sexton and Cooley Sexton.
Funeral services will be conducted 3:00 PM Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at Emma Gray Memorial United Methodist Church by Rev. Brenda Curtis. Interment will follow in Greenhaven Memorial Gardens.
A masonic service rendered by Bethel Masonic Lodge will be held at 6:30 PM, Monday, January 27, 2014 at 6:30 PM in the Lanford-Gwinn Mortuary Chapel with visitation following from 7:00-9:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Habitat for Humanity, 2270 South Pine Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302 or Emma Gray Memorial United Methodist Church, 321 W. Georgia Street, Woodruff, SC 29388.
