BOYKIN, Gene Cecil (Age 75) Gene passed away, at home, in Otis Orchards, WA. Sunday, October 27, 2013, after a valiant 10 month struggle with cancer. He was born in Spokane on November 24, 1937 to the late Clyde and Irene Boykin. Gene graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1956, joined the United States Coast Guard and retired from East Valley School District Transportation Department 13 years ago. Gene is survived by his wife of 42 years, Judy; his son, Bryan and wife, Jamie; his grandson, Brady and granddaughter, Brooke. Gene and Judy's son, Gary, passed away in 2005 but is survived by their daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Boykin and granddaughters, Julia and Abigail. Gene is also survived by his brother, Chuck (Charlie to Gene) Boykin, wife, Kathy and children, Catherine Boykin-Sena (Mark), Craig Boykin and Charlene Boykin and their children. Other family members include George and Delores Miller, their children and grandchildren and Fred and Linda Helms, their daughters and granddaughter. Gene's priority was always his family and friends. He enjoyed bowling, camping, racing motorcycles, boating and many years at their second home in Bayview, Idaho. Gene loved being on the water and was also a member of the Diamond Squares for many years. Friends are invited to celebrate Gene's life at a potluck, in the shop of Bryan and Jamie's, 9309 N. Mitchell Road, Otis Orchards, WA on Sunday, November 3 from 1 to 4. Please bring your chair. We want to thank "all" the staff on the 10th floor of Deaconess Hospital for the tender caring they gave to Gene. Also Hospice of Spokane, thank you for your heartfelt caring and always being there. Gene has gone to be with Gary, once again they are together. When any of us feel sad or lonely, we will look to the clouds, for our Angels are watching over us, always and forever. My heart is lost without you Gene, but I know we will be together again so I don't say goodbye - I say "meet me at the gate with open arms when I come home, my love. " "One more time". The Boykin Family summer home at Newman Lake was very close to mine and I looked forward to their return every summer. Many great times were had by all during those summers. My thoughts and prayers go out to Gene and his family. He will be missed!

Gene came out of Roosevelt in a class that had many outstanding students. Some went on to make their mark in medicine, the arts and sports. I remember Gene as a very quiet, soft spoken boy, always with an infectious smile and a shy "hi" to his fellow students. When I saw him forty years later at a Lewis and Clark reunion, there was that same shy, soft spoken boy I had spent 12 years in school with. He had grown a little older, just as we all had but time had been good to him and he looked just the same and had that same "hi" to all of his former classmates. Gene made his mark on the people he met, the fine family he was blessed with and his classmates who have lost a childhood friend.

Gene will always be remembered by the kids on the "Westside" of Newman Lake for his great sense of humor that we were blessed with twice a day. Gene was "our" bus driver and what a great time we had. Now your probably thinking how can a bus driver make for a good time on a school bus. Well Gene had a way of making it happen. Every morning (1977-1983) we would come down to the bus stop place our lunchbox and school bags on the ground and head up into the hill at the stop (we were the first stop). Gene would always stop the bus and play hide and seek from his seat in the bus. He would sit there and use the PA system on the outside of the bus to let us know he could see us. Good times with a very special man. I didn't know Gene had two boys my age until Junior High and I became friends with both of them. Gene say hi to Gary for me.
