Avanell WILLIAMS

WILLIAMS, Avanell Avanell Williams went to be with Jesus on Wednesday, March 5, 2014, at the age of 86. In her final days she was surrounded by family and friends, and she passed away peacefully with her son, Pete, by her bedside. Avanell was born in December of 1927, in Cleveland, MS., to Ferrell and Mavis Greer. She married Roe Williams in Ellensburg, WA., in July of 1946, and together they had two children, "Pete" Roe Ferrell and Mary Janell. Avanell earned what she called her "PhT" (pushing hubby through) degree while Roe earned his master's degree in electrical engineering at Oregon State University. The two moved around the Northwest before settling in Spokane to live near their daughter and three grandchildren. Avanell loved to garden, fish, camp, read, knit, sew, and do puzzles, and she was known for her "green thumb." She also was a big sports fan and faithfully attended her grandchildren's various games, rain or shine. Avanell had a sweet tooth, and in recent years she enjoyed going on Tuesday night dates to Didier's Frozen Yogurt & More with family and friends. One of the greatest joys of her life was living to see the births of her two great-grandsons, Caleb and Abram. She was known for her independent, competitive, and feisty spirit, but what defined Avanell most was her Christian faith. She was a dedicated member of Sunrise Church of Christ, in Spokane, receiving communion at home whenever her health prevented her from attending church on Sunday. She was a devoted prayer warrior, and she had a keen intuition. Her sweet laugh and listening ear will be greatly missed. Avanell is survived by her son, Pete Williams; her sisters, Mary Grissom and Jane Breland; her grandchildren, Jacob (Erica) Proffitt, John (Emily) Proffitt, and Deborah (Joel) Ryman; and her great grandsons, Caleb Proffitt and Abram Proffitt. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ferrell and Mavis Greer; her husband, Roe Williams; her sister, Dorothy "Dot," and her daughter, Mary Janell. A memorial service will be held at 10:30am on March 22, at Sunrise Church of Christ, 4718 N. Ash St., Spokane, WA, 99205. Memorial donations may be made to Gates of Hope, P.O. Box 384, Boise, ID., 83701. The family wishes to thank Avanell's large network of support, all those who called and visited her to say goodbye, and the 5th floor nurses, ICU care team, and harpist at Holy Family Hospital.
