Was born in Dewey County, South Dakota, 30 Jan 1927. She was the youngest of five children (three girls and two boys). She grew up on a ranch and attended country schools. She was very proud to claim that she had a personal chauffer, her brother Max, who drove her to school in a horse and buggy. She moved into town, Belle Fourche, SD, where she attended high school and worked as a waitress part-time. She met her future husband, Jim Routt (from Chicago), while they both worked at Montgomery Wards. They were married on 26 September 1946. Her husband passed away in April 1996. Before relocating to Spokane, WA in 1955, they moved to Salt Lake City, UT; Hastings, NE and then back to Belle Fourche, SD. Bess Routt is survived by seven children, USAF Lt. Col. James Routt (Julie), Spokane County Deputy Sheriff Sgt. (Ret) DA Routt (Sandy), Michael Routt (Sheryl), Steve Routt (Marlene), Mary Jordan (Michael), Tom Routt (Shelly), and John Routt (Denise). Bess worked with the Cub Scouts, Bluebirds, and Oregon State University Mothers Club. She was a parishioner and leading influence at St. Mary's Catholic Church for over 50 years. She was a Eucharistic Minister and coordinated hundreds of funerals for her fellow parishioners. She was also a member of the Phoenix Club and Women at the Well at St. Mary's Church. She was employed at Centennial Mills, retiring in 1984. Bess enjoyed traveling the world to visit family, sewing beautiful quilts, having lunch with her long-time friends, and attending her book club and card club. She truly loved having her family and friends visit her home, sharing a cup of coffee and her famous cinnamon rolls, and laughing about all the good times the family had growing up at Windy Bay, Lake Coeur d'Alene, ID. She was blessed with 18 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Bess Routt was an amazing woman who lived life to the fullest and loved being with her children. She will be missed by all who knew her, but now rests in the peace of Christ and will live an eternal life in the joy and happiness of the living God. Just before her passing she told the family that "when she gets to Heaven she will have a new job -- being our Guardian Angel". A Vigil Service will be held Friday, September 28, 2012 at 7 PM and a Funeral Mass will take place Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 11 AM, both at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Spokane Valley.
