John P. Fertakis

May 2, 1928 - November 13, 2012 John Peter Fertakis (84) died on November 13, 2012 in Spokane, WA with his family by his side. A graveside memorial will be held at 11 a.m. on December 1, 2012 at the Pullman City Cemetery, followed by a luncheon at the Pullman Presbyterian Church. Dr. Fertakis was born on May 2, 1928 in Seattle, WA. He moved to Missoula, MT at a young age and graduated from Missoula County High School in 1947. He spent summers working for the USFS as a fire lookout, firefighter, and dispatcher. He enlisted in the US Air Force in 1948 and spent 2 years at Clark Field in the Philippines during the Korean War. After his discharge from the USAF in September 1952, he began his distinguished academic career at EWU in Cheney, earning a BA in Business Studies and Education. After teaching high school for 2 years in Vancouver, WA, he returned to EWU in 1957 as a professor of Business Studies. While at EWU, he met and married the love of his life, Mavis K. Gorman, on December 20, 1958. He went on to earn his MBA and PhD in Accounting from UW in Seattle. In 1966 he joined the faculty at WSU in the College of Business, retiring in 1993. During that time, he published 23 articles in professional accounting journals, authored two books and served on committees for several national accounting organizations. He was a long-time member of Pullman Presbyterian Church, serving as Elder, Deacon, and Treasurer. John is survived by his wife of almost 54 years, Mavis; sons Jon (Mary) and Joel (Deborah); daughter Nancy Beierle (David); daughter-in-law Stacey Fertakis-Walk (Steven); and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Daniel, in 2005. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, a kind friend, and will be dearly missed.
