WEAR, SMSgt Gilbert D. (Ret.) SMSgt Gilbert D. Wear 87, of Spokane, died Thursday, April 4, 2013 at home. He was born and raised in Rogersville, Alabama (son of Auburne and Oscar James Wear) leaving home and Lauderdale County High School at the age of 17 to join the Army
Air Corps as a gunner. For his 22 year military history he was stationed at Fort Wright Army Base and Fairchild AFB Spokane. He flew 35 missions in World War II's European Campaign and 22 missions during the Korean Conflict
earning both the Distinquished Flying Cross and the Purple Heart
and numerous other medals and awards. Followed by 25 years as a service agent with Farmers Insurance. Gil was a life time member of D.A.V. #45 as well as a long time member of the Spokane Moose Club
and Eagles Lodge #1. His interests included gold prospecting and lapidary. He was preceded in death by his wife of 30 years, Shirley, and his daughter, Anita Marie, two sisters, Annie Margaret Pepper of Athens, Alabama and Dorothy Sue Clark of Manassas, Virginia. He is survived by his brother, Kenneth W. Wear, of Mobile, Alabama, seven children, 19 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Military graveside service for Gilbert D. Wear, will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery, 7200 North Wall, on Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 2 P.M. The family will receive friends at his home of 56 years, 3322 West Dalke, after the services. At his request any memorial contributions can be made to any Veterans/Military Association.
