(Age 76)

Of Newport, WA passed away Friday May 13, 2011 at Holy Family Hospital in Spokane.
Joan was born March 29, 1935 In New York, New York the daughter of Joseph and Marie (Higgins) Thornton. Joan grew up in the borough of Queens in New York where she attended and graduated from high school. After high school, Joan got married and the couple had three children. The family later moved to San Diego, CA where she worked as an Executive Secretary at Security Pacific National Bank. While working at the bank she served as the president of ESI.
After Joan retired from the bank she went back to college where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Sociology. In 1978 Joan moved to Newport where she met Clyde Foster, the couple married in 1981. Joan went back to college where she earned her RN Degree and later her Master's Degree in Social Work. She worked at Holy Family Hospital until her retirement in 2006.
In her younger years Joan enjoyed competitive rifle shooting. In recent years she enjoyed traveling (especially cruises) and reading.
Joan is survived by her husband Clyde at their home in Newport; two sons, John (Laura) Drivick and Richard Drivick both of San Diego, CA; one daughter, Victoria (Steve) Seymour of San Diego, CA; one brother Richard (Barbara) Thornton of New York; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild all of San Diego, CA.
A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 at 10AM at the Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport. In Lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the American Lung Association.

I too, was blessed to have known Joan. She defined the meaning of a "Christian" woman. Always with a smile and caring attitude. There will always be a hole
in the social workiers at Holy Family without her.

I was blessed to meet Joan in my studies at Eastern in the Social Work Program. Joan was a caring person and she will be greatly missed missed by all who knew her. May she rest in peace.
