Utaka Akiyama Obituary

AKIYAMA,
Utaka

A Spokane resident for 65 years, Utaka (Tak) Akiyama passed away at his home on April 17. He was born on May 13, 1942 in Opal City, OR and graduated from Culver High School, Culver, OR in 1942. Following high school, along with his family, he entered the Tule Lake Relocation Center and later transferred to the Minidoka Relocation Center, from where he enlisted in the US Army and served through the remainder of World War II. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he worked for the railroad, followed by a career with the US Postal Service, from which he retired. Tak enjoyed fishing, gardening, baseball and his cat, Fuzzy. He was a devoted uncle to his six nieces and nephews; and nine great-nieces and nephews who will miss him dearly. He is also survived by his brother, Yasumasa of Renton, WA and was preceded in death by sister Tokiko and brothers, Sadaki and Minoru. A memorial service will be held May 21, 2011 at 3 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial remembrances be sent to Highland Park Memorial Church, Hospice of Spokane or the Spokane Chapter of JACL.
