Phillip CODD Obituary

CODD, Phillip William (Age 64) Passed away suddenly on July 1, 2013. Phillip was born in Spokane, the third child of Robert J. Codd and Ceceilia A. (Dufault) Codd on November 21, 1948. He is survived by his wife, Carrie, daughter, Sara, Carrie's grown children, Madeline, David and Brian, as well as ten sisters and brothers, Sheila LeDuc, Eileen Codd, Robert Codd, William Codd, Patricia Codd-O'Neill, Kevin Codd, Nicholas Codd, Louis Codd, Paul Codd, and Therese Perry. He attended Saint Charles Elementary School, Mater Cleri Seminary High School, and Eastern Washington University. He obtained his Bachelors of Science in Nursing, and served for many years at Sacred Heart Medical Center in the Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department. He was highly regarded by his colleagues for his gentle and expert care of his patients, and his unflappable calm combined with a dry sense of humor. At Sacred Heart he met the love of his life and future wife, Carrie. He was a husband of great tenderness, honesty, and patience. They recently celebrated their sixteenth wedding anniversary with a grand family barbecue. Their marriage was blessed by the birth of their daughter, Sara, thirteen years ago, and to whom Phil was deeply dedicated and upon whom he lavished an abundance of fatherly love. Phillip was a caring brother to his ten siblings, both in their youth and in adulthood. When gathered together he was the first to tease, but always with an easy smile and with humor that never offended. Phil was a skilled craftsman and a gifted, self-taught artist who created many amazing woodcarvings, beautiful scrimshaw pieces, furniture and leatherwork. His latest interest was building delicate wooden boxes. For all his adult life Phil was a dedicated athlete, competing in many running, swimming, biking, and cross-country skiing events, including numerous Bloomsday runs. At the time of his sudden death, he was taking a morning jog through Riverside State Park near his home. His final moments were spent in this place he loved so much, running quiet and easy under a deep blue sky, shaded by an abundance of pines, the smell of pitch in the summer air, and the roar of the Spokane River in the distance. Alone and at peace in this paradise on earth, he went home to the paradise and peace that lasts forever. Phillip was a quiet and deep man, immensely sensitive to others, and a lover of animals, nature, and all things spiritual. As he loved so he is loved. In celebration of his life, a vigil service will be held for Phillip at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, July 9th, at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home at 5100 W. Wellesley Ave. in Spokane. The funeral Mass will be held at Saint Aloysius Church on Wednesday, July 10th, at 10:00 am. Though flowers are living expressions of love and care and are always welcome, the family asks that enduring memorials in Phillip's name be made to Active4Youth, PO Box 30501, Spokane, WA 99223-3008 or on-line at www.active4youth.org.

Phil and I met in college and became instant friends in the late 60's. Very warm and friendly. Invited me to his home to meet his family. I hadn't seen him for many years and then about ten years ago I ran into him at Sacred Heart ER. We recognized one another right away and had a nice visit after all those years. He hadn't changed a bit since college. Still the same gentle-spirited person I knew in college. I was always impressed with his authenticity and love for his family. My thoughts and prayers are with his entire family at this time.

Wow, what a shock to hear Phil passed away, and on a solo run! Incredible loss and sadness, really takes the wind out of my sails. My heart goes out to all who were close to him and looking forward to many more great times together.

Phil was a classmate and good friend at Mater Cleri and Bishop White. We were running buddies out there on the country roads around Colbert long before the running boom. I spent a few memorable days and nights at Phil's house, getting to know his many brothers and sisters, all very talented. We got reacquainted at road runs in the Spokane area in the 80's and 90's, but I haven't seen him in a few years, sadly. He was one of those guys you always feel will be there and it's just like you haven't been apart when you meet again.

There are people you forget after many years have gone by, and people you will always remember. Phil is one running buddy I will always remember. Maybe it's because our group, which included Phil, my ex Terry Kelly, John Blalock, and Joe Jakubiak, shared so many trail runs, road trips, bbq's, and Bohemian beers. Possibly it's because I nearly lit Phil's house on fire with a blowtorch when he was trying to teach me how to melt klister wax onto my cross country skis. Or maybe it's because he witnessed my first road race win. It was a few weeks after Mt. St. Helens had blanketed Spokane in ash, and I hadn't run a step due to the poor air quality. Still, we decided to head up to Newport for their annual Mogelpecker 8 miler. Phil won the men's race and at the finish line was gracefully congratulated with a kiss on the cheek by Miss Newport herself, resplendent in a tiara, satin sash, and white dress. I remember he was very impressed by this. I surprised myself by winning the women's division, and to my utter embarrassment, promptly lost the cornflakes I'd had for breakfast, as Phil put it for years to come, "all over Miss Newport's patent leather shoes." Instead of the large trophies we eagerly anticipated, we were awarded duck calls attached to scrap pieces of 2 x 4. Later that morning at a local diner, Phil ordered for me, deadpan as always: "She'll have the cornflakes."
Rest in peace, my friend. I'm off to do a trail run in your memory.
My deepest condolences,

Carrie and Sara - Our prayers go out to you both. We are incredibly saddened by Phil's sudden passing. In the past three years that we have shared carpooling for the girls, we have witnessed Phil's deep love for Sara. It was obvious that they had a very special bond and I know how greatly he will be missed.

Carrie, I am so sorry for your loss. i will always remember his kindness and professionalism.

Carrie- I am so very sorry to hear this tragic news. I worked with Phil in the Intensive Care Unit in the early 80's and he was a preceptor for me. What a kind, caring, gentle man who was also a wonderful nurse. He was someone that understood that nurses are there for perhaps the most important moments in others' lives and was a role model for all of us. I'm certain your heart is breaking, but for what little it may help, know that you and your family are in my prayers. Peg Currie

So sorry for your loss. Such a beautiful obituary. Thank you for sharing some of his story. I loved the video. Although first cousins, I'm sorry I don't know many of you. Your dad, Robert J. Codd, was my Godfather.

Carrie, Sara, Madeline, David, and Brian. My soul is saddened to lose such a fine cousin as Phil - I always walked away from our infrequent visits feeling that I knew him well. I also felt good about our relationship when our time together ended. I am also elated to know that one day, we will be able to continue those visits in a heavenly environment! My condolences, good wishes and prayers are with you all in your grieving, during your temporary loss of your good friend, husband, and father. ~ Tom Nash, Everett, WA

Sheila, my aunt called today to tell me there was an obit for Jack Bartol in the paper. I was further saddened to see the notice for your brother's passing as well. I have such fond memories of our years at St. Charles, that I want to keep us that age forever. Phillip, his family and all of you will be in my prayers.

Carrie, Sara, Madeline, David & Brian- it was an honor to have known Phil and together with Joe Jakubiak and Terry Kelly, this 4 some had some demanding training runs when we were in our mid 20's with me literally hanging on to their shirt tails when I got too tired! We had great gatherings with my other Falcon Track Club buddies and lots of food, laughter and cross country ski trips. Terry told me that Phil had only been retired a short time and I am sorry for the fact that he had so much more quality time left at 64. What a terrible loss of such a sweet, funny and dedicated person. Even though I lost contact somewhere around 30 years ago, he will always be in my heart. Pat Engberg
