Died February 11, 2011 following a battle with breast cancer. She was born March 2, 1923 in Spokane and graduated from North Central High School and Eastern Washington College of Education. She devoted 33 years of her life to teaching. She taught the last 23 years at Bowdish Jr. High, developing close professional and personal relationships with her fellow educators, which she kept throughout her life. Though thousands of students passed through her classrooms, she was deeply committed to each one of them. She loved sports, and was especially passionate about her Eastern Washington Eagles, the Mariners, and the Seattle Seahawks. Surviving family includes a daughter, Melanie Nord (Mark); son, Richard Strait (Rose Ann); two grandchildren, Erica Strait and Randy Nord; stepson, Ernie Nye (Virginia), as well as their extended family. She was preceded in death by husbands, Loie Strait and Bill Nye; and daughter, Julie Ann Strait. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to HAZEN & JAEGER FUNERAL HOME, 1306 N. MONROE ST. Memorial contributions may be made to breast cancer research.
