LeRoy Stanford Obituary

STANFORD, LeRoy Eugene
(Age 78)

Passed from this life February 4, 2011. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. LeRoy was born on February 8, 1932 to John and Nellie Stanford in a cabin at Manson, WA. He grew up in Manson and graduated from Manson High School in 1950 and Wenatchee Junior College in 1952 with an AA Degree in Radio Speech. In 1952 LeRoy went to work for the Washington State Patrol in communications in Wenatchee, WA. In 1959 he transferred to Spokane as the Communications Supervisor where he served 29 ½ years before retiring on disability.

In 1959 he married Donna Elliott, a union which lasted 18 years and bringing with it an extended family of three children; Nancy, Bob and Jack. Daughters Shelley and Wendy were born by the middle 60's. In 1979 LeRoy married Marian Schrader, who preceded him in death in 1985. He married Nola Remillong in 1989, acquiring an extended family of six or more children.

LeRoy was preceded in death by parents John and Nellie of Manson, WA; LeRoy's second wife, Marian; brother, Wayne Stanford of Manson, WA; and grandson, Jason Hanson.

Surviving are his wife, Nola Stanford; sisters, Doris Moon of Malaga, WA, Arlene Evavold of Lake Tapps, WA; brothers, Earl Stanford of Manson, WA, Roger Stanford of Moses Lake, WA; daughters, Shelley Shimek of Milwaukie, OR and Wendy Murphy of Kirkland, WA; extended family, Nancy Elliott of Redmond, WA, Robert Elliott of Arlington, WA, Jack Elliott of Auburn, WA, Ann Davis of Silverdale, WA, Mike Remillong of Spokane, WA, Mary Bryant of Spokane, WA, Janis Grant of Edgewood, WA, Sue Hamilton of Wenatchee, WA, Sara Coup of Spokane, WA; grandchildren, Rochelle and Ryan Rau, Jarrett Vauthier, Kerry Anna Lodge, Kristin Daron, Jason Elliott, Jaime Chew, Heather Mooshegian, Holly Elliott, Theresa Sheeley, James Doneen, Brandon Bryant, Justin Bryant, Angie Fullerton, David Hamilton, Ryan Hanson, Kelsey Browning and Ed Grant. He is also survived by sixteen great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He suffered from Rheumatoid Arthritis since age nine. In spite of the problems this caused he tried to live a normal life, i.e., several trophies won in competition shooting. LeRoy was a member of the NRA, Eagles, Aerie #2, Washington State Patrol Retirees Association serving as secretary-treasurer for seven years, International Footprinters Associations Chapters 68 & 34 wherein he served on the governing board including President for several years.

LeRoy often said "with all the different medications I've taken over the years I should have been dead a long time ago". We thank God for allowing him to stay around this long to be with us. He enjoyed every minute of his life and now one of the best things to be said is "He Doesn't Hurt Anymore".

Visitation will be from 2:00 to 8:00 pm on Friday, and noon to 2:00 pm on Saturday. Funeral services will follow on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 3:00 pm in the Alwin Chapel at Hazen & Jaeger Funeral Home, 1306 N. Monroe St. in Spokane. A reception will be held following the service.

Leroy was a friend and co-worker since 1958. He was a comfort to hear on the radio when you were at the other end. He was one of the State Patrol's best and will be missed.
