Paul Richter Obituary

RICHTER, Paul H.

Paul Harald Richter was born on February 15, 1921 in Spokane, Washington to his parents, George and Hilda Richter. He died at the age of 89 on February 1, 2011 of Pneumonia.

He grew up in Spokane's Northside, attending North Central High School where he graduated in the class of 1939. Paul has one brother, George N. Richter (June) who preceded him in death.

Following high school Paul served in the Army Air Force as a pilot and flight instructor where he learned the love of flying. After WWII he enrolled at Gonzaga University where he did his undergraduate work and received his Law Degree. He practiced law at Washington Trust Bank before launching out on his own, where he eventually became one of the founding partners of Richter, Wimberly, and Ericson, P.S. His vision as an attorney was to be kind to people and truly help them, which he did each and every day of his legal career.

Paul married Ruth E. Carter in 1948 in Spokane. Paul and Ruth lived a full life where they were involved in many church and political activities, golf, and traveling. They have three children, Paul C. Richter (Karen), Sublimity, OR; Joan L. Gladow (Jeff), Salem, OR; and Barbara Richter (Ken Carwin, deceased), Seattle, WA, along with five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Ruth preceded Paul in death in 1987.

Paul married Phyllis M. Tompkins in 1989. Paul and Phyllis also had a full life and enjoyed many activities including travel, church activities and involvement with Phyllis's three children; Debra Tompkins, Spokane, WA (deceased); Chuck Tompkins, Los Angeles, CA; and Steve Tompkins (Lisa), Spokane, WA, and Phyllis's two granddaughters, Sarah and Alli, both of Spokane, WA.

Paul lived his life with a strong faith in Jesus Christ and was a mentor to many people. After an injury five years ago he resided at ManorCare in Spokane, where Phyllis and the staff provided wonderful, loving care until his death this week.

Donations in Paul's memory can be made to Union Gospel Mission, 1224 E. Trent Ave., Spokane, WA 99202; or Pilgrim Lutheran Church Youth Programs, 2733 W. Northwest Blvd., Spokane, WA 99205.

Visitation will be Friday from 2:00 to 8:00 pm at HAZEN & JAEGER FUNERAL HOME, 1306 N. MONROE ST . Private interment at Riverside Memorial Park will be followed by the Memorial Service celebrating Paul's life at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at Pilgrim Lutheran Church, 2733 W. Northwest Blvd, where Paul served as chair of the building committee for the current sanctuary.

Dear Joan, Barb and Rick -

Your Dad will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. I have such wonderful memories of spending time with your folks "back in the day."

Paul was strong in his faith and was an credit to his profession. As you know he gave me excellent and very kind legal counsel after Norm's passing. What he told me made sense when little else did. Our heavenly Father must be so pleased to welcome Paul home.

You and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. May Paul's memory be a blessing.

Loving regards,

I'm a lucky girl to have had such a wonderful grandpa! Whether it was teaching us to golf in the woods behind his house, reciting poetry or reminiscing about a good meal and beach walk on Maui Grandpa Paul always brought a smile and chuckle wherever he went. :-)
