Bernice Ingman Obituary

INGMAN, Bernice A.

Of Port Hadlock, WA, passed away unexpectedly on March 2, 2011. She died peacefully from a heart attack in her family home of 55 years. Bernice was born August 22, 1925 in Ritzville, WA to parents Carl Heinemann and Doris Scheel Heinemann. As a youngster she worked on the family farm that her grandparents homesteaded in 1873. She received many awards for her prize steers that she showed in competitions, and she was elected Queen of the Adams County Fair in 1942. She completed all 12 grades of school in Ritzville, graduating in 1943. She then attended Washington State University and was a member of the Sigma Kappa Sorority. She graduated in 1947 with a BA in Education.
Shortly after receiving her first teaching assignment, she met the love of her life, Ken Ingman, whom she married on June 18, 1948. They enjoyed 52 wonderful years of marriage until Ken passed away in 2001. She often commented to her children that -Daddy' was still watching over her. We are comforted in the fact that they are now forever together again.
Bernice ended her teaching career in Chimacum having taught Home Economics, Health and PE. Many of her former students still refer to her as their 2nd mom. This is quite a tribute to the respect and friendship she freely gave to her students throughout her career.
Bernice's favorite hobbie was playing Bridge. She was a member of an elite group of players who achieved the status of Life Master. She also enjoyed trout fishing, clamming, crabbing, bowling, golf, and entertaining family and friends at her home. She was a faithful Seahawks and Mariners sports fan, enjoyed road trips to Reno and activities with her seven grandchildren.
Survivors include her brother Don Heinemann (Marianne) of Spokane, her three children; Barbara Ingman (Stella Moreno) of Aptos, CA, Linda Laughlin (Jim) of Bainbridge Island, WA, and Jeff Ingman (Deborah), of Burlington, WA, seven loving grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren who will never forget her unconditional love and compassion for everyone. It is inspiring and motivating to know that she approached each person and situation with such love and acceptance.
The Celebration of Bernice's Life is planned for 5 pm Saturday, March 12th at the Port Townsend Elks Club. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Port Hadlock United Methodist Church or the Chimacum High School Boosters Club.
