Bette Eunice MEYER Obituary

MEYER, Bette Eunice
(Age 87)

Bette Eunice Meyer, of Spokane died Friday November 24, 2017. Bette was born on April 18, 1930 in Chicago, IL to Henry and Pearl (Kane) Wagner. She married Robert E. Meyer in Chicago in 1951. She graduated from DePaul University in Chicago with degrees in French and History. In 1961, Bette's husband was transferred to Spokane and she fell in love with Spokane and Eastern Washington. Every Sunday the family would pile into the station wagon for a day trip to learn about the area. While taking Geology classes at Eastern Washington State College (EWSC) more trips followed. She was a substitute French teacher as her children were growing up. In 1967, she received her Master in Education at EWSC. She was the History Curator at Cheney Cowles Museum. While there, she also worked on degrees in Geography and Urban Planning at EWSC. This led her to her job as Historic Preservation chief at WA St. Parks in Olympia and eventually in Urban Planning with Benton-Franklin County. In Pleasanton, CA, while working at COVA she did research and began her career writing historical books and treatises on Adams County; Ainsworth, WA; historic doorknobs and later Fort George Wright. She moved to Pullman and worked at WSU for several years. Eventually she and her husband Robert retired to Spokane where he died. Bette served on the Spokane Landmarks Commission and was active in Historic Preservation. She was fortunate to later meet Lloyd Harding; they were married and enjoyed 20 years together until her death. They spent time traveling regionally with friends in their RV and wintering in the Southwest for many years. They liked cruises, visiting many ports of call. Bette enjoyed collecting and refurbishing antiques and she liked to read. Bette was preceded in death by her parents and her son Robert D. She is survived by her husband Lloyd; her daughters Kathleen and Susan; her step daughters Marcia and Karen; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial mass will be held on Friday December 1, 2017 at 11:00 am at St John Vianney in Spokane Valley. Her remains will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Memorial Gardens following the services.
