Charles Benson Obituary

BENSON, Charles Robert
(Age 74)

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother went to be with his loving Lord on March 17th, 2011, surrounded by his family. Charles was born in Spokane, WA on September 12, 1936 to Robert Charles Benson and Ethel Nora Cox-Benson. He grew up in Hillyard and graduated from Rogers High School in 1954. After high school he joined the Navy, where he learned the skills that he used for the rest of his life being a diesel mechanic. Charles attended a trade's college becoming a fuel pump and injection specialist. Charles started working at Cummins as an apprentice for six years before moving on to Williams Equipment (Kenworth) for 27 years. After retiring, Charles drove school bus and played golf in between his routes. He married his beloved wife Bertha Ann Nachtwey in February of 1959 and enjoyed 52 wonderful years. Together they raised five children, John Eugene Wilkinson (Deceased) Theresa Ann (Bill) Bidowski, Charles Richard "Rick" (Stacey) Benson, Sheri Kay (Hal) Dornquast , Julie Diane Horst. Charles is survived by his sister Marjorie Virginia Pugh and a brother Frank Warren (Janice) Benson; several cousins, nieces and nephews; 25 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and two on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents and son John. Charles had a hard life and was determined to make a better life for himself and everyone around him. He never was judgmental, always let his children make their mistakes and was always there when they needed him the most. Charles was the rock for his children and siblings, the one you turned to for an answer to any question. He had a love for golf whether he was playing or just watching it on TV; he enjoyed camping, RV'ing and spending time with his wife, kids and being with his dogs. A Rosary will be held Friday, March 25th, 2011 7PM at Hennessey Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, March 26th, 2011, 11:00AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 5021 N Nelson St, Spokane, WA with burial to follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Spokane Valley, WA.
