Mr. Holloway made his transition Sunday, May 1, 2011 from medical complications following a hip fracture on April 1st. Dayton was born July 13, 1929 in Montesano, Washington to Claire and Roscoe William (R.W.) Holloway. Following elementary and secondary education in Montesano, he attended Grays Harbor Community College, Gonzaga University and graduated from Washington State University (WSU) in 1953 with a degree in Architectural Engineering. During his time at WSU he was President of his Delta Chi fraternity. Upon graduation he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Air Force and assigned to duty in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Following his military service, Mr. Holloway returned to Spokane in 1956 to begin his extensive architectural career. Early in his career, Dayton worked with Joseph M. Doyle, Electrical Engineer and Developer Earl McCarthy for whom he designed the Northtown, Shadle Park and University City Shopping Centers. During 1962 he was Assistant to WSU College Architect, Phil Keene, in Pullman, WA.
In 1963 he joined with Kim Barnard to establish the architectural firm of Barnard and Holloway, AIA. During their 47 year partnership Mr. Holloway was responsible for over 400 commercial projects in Washington, Idaho and Montana. Examples of his work include the original Eastern Washington University (EWU) John F. Kennedy Memorial Library and Patterson Hall, the Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC) Library and Learning Resources Center and the Athletic Addition of the Spokane Club. He also helped design the Bonneville Power Administration building near Vancouver, Washington with Mr. Barnard and Ralph Smith. Dayton also worked with Bovay Engineering where he was responsible for the design of numerous projects including the Spokane Boeing Plant built in the early 1990s.
Governor Dixie Lee Ray appointed Mr. Holloway to the Washington State Board of Architectural Registration in 1978 for a four year term during which he served as Board President. He also served as an advisor to the State Insurance Commissioner and was appointed by Governor Dan Evans as a member of the State Building Code Advisory Council during formulation of the original regulations for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
In 1954 he married Janet (Eisenman) Holloway and together they raised two daughters, Susan (Walter Schumacher) and Sandra (Robert Brown). In addition to his daughters, Mr. Holloway is survived by his granddaughter Maia Schumacher, his sister Joan Sandler and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Dayton is also survived by his long term fiancée Virginia J. Shields and her daughters, Gayle Terry, Lisa McLain and Sherilynn Bare.
At Mr. Holloway's specific written instruction, no service was held following his death. The family plans a private celebration of Dayton's life at a later date. Arrangements were entrusted to:
