Dorothea Ashlock Obituary
ASHLOCK,
Dorothea Verle
Passed away on April 22, 2011, in Kirkland, Washing-ton, near her son and daughter. Verle was born March 1, 1923 in Hay, Washington on the farm of her parents, John and Verdella Schoeff. Verle was a lifelong resident of Washington State and grew up on a farm near Dusty with her four brothers. She graduated from Lacrosse High School in 1941. Verle attended Washington State College where she received her Bachelor of Arts degree in home economics in 1945. She minored in journalism. One of her journalism professors at WSC was Joseph L. Ashlock, who would one day become her father-in-law. Verle remembered that on his office desk was a picture of his son, Joe, in his Navy uniform, who at the time was serving overseas during WWII. Verle would later meet her professor's son while visiting with friends at Lake Coeur d'Alene in Idaho. The couple were married in 1948. After Verle graduated from WSC, she worked for the Spokesman-Review, giving cooking demonstrations and writing a food column for the paper. In 1947, she became one of a long line of "Dorothy Deans" who worked for the newspaper over the years. After she married, Verle worked at WSC for several years in the home economics department, teaching textile construction, while her husband, Joe, finished college. During the Korean War, the Navy recalled Joe into service. The couple spent over a year in California's Sierra Nevada Mountains where Joe ran the naval weather station. Later, Verle ran the front office of the Citizen Journal in Rosalia. She and her husband, Joe, owned a printing business and printed the weekly newspaper for the community from 1953 to 1988. The business closed following Joe's passing in September of 1988. After her husband's death, Verle continued to live in Rosalia until 2007, when she moved to the Seattle area to be near her children. Verle lived over 80 years in Whitman County. A memorial service will be held at the Rosalia Methodist Church at 1:00 pm on April 28, 2011. Following the memorial service, a private graveside service will be held at the Rosalia IOOF Evergreen Cemetery. Verle is survived by her daughter, Janet Brady and her husband Mace, and son, Joseph and his wife, Angela. The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Rosalia Fire Department or Rosalia Dollars for Scholars. SCHANZENBACH FUNERAL HOME in charge of arrangements.
