Passed away February 10th 2011 in Spokane, WA after a short battle with cancer. He was born September 15th 1927 in Hardin, MT to Charles and Eve Newkirk. Fred was baptized at St. Joseph's Church. He grew up in Montana and graduated from Helena High School in 1946. Fred served in WWII as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps. After his military service he met and married Mary Lou Hand in 1955 in Walla Walla, Washington. They later moved to the Spokane, Washington while he proceeded to work for Standard Oil and Chevron Service Station for several years. He later retired from his own business, Carburetor and Ignition, in 1995. Fred was a man of many passions. He enjoyed reading, shooting pool and visiting with his friends. He also loved cheering for his favorite basketball team, Gonzaga Bulldogs. He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou, of 55 years, his three daughters, Wanda Madsen, Kathleen Martello, Rebecca Ballou; seven grandchildren, Erin Newkirk, Jesse Ballou, Alicia Demmerly, Justin Martello, Danielle Ballou, Meghan Ballou, Tyler Scharff, and 6 great-grandchildren. Fred will be remembered most for his love of family and his passion for knowledge.
