George Obde Obituary

OBDE,
George J.

George J. Obde, loving husband, uncle and friend, passed away Thursday February 24 at the age of 94. George was born February 17, 1917 in Platte, Nebraska to Lebanese immigrants Joseph and Jamelia Obde. He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters. George was a graduate of Gonzaga Prep where he excelled in basketball. He played for the YMCA in their Pioneer League and toured the Eastern US on a basketball tour for the Spokane Athletic Round Table in 1939. George joined the Army Air Corp with brother Jimmy. Later, he and his brothers owned the Blue Bell Tavern, Obde's Coney Island (with their famous coney sauce) and Obde's Restaurant all here in Spokane. George had a great sense of humor and was so much fun to be around. He really enjoyed his friends and family. He loved playing golf and working in his garden. He is survived by his wife June, of the past 40 years, stepson David Ware, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephew Jack Obde. He is now reunited with Our Lord and his loving family.

Uncle Georgie, as he was known to me, used to let me play with his wooden shoe trees where he lived in a home above the grandmother for whom I am named. I remember him making me laugh and letting me play waitress at the restaurant when I was nine years old. Some of my fondest memories and it doesn't seem so long ago. God bless his beautiful heart. Uncle george was the last of a very special family. We loved his great sence of humor and he would remind us so much of our beloved dad. They both laughed at their own jokes. To visit with him was like looking into a family history book with rose colored glasses.
Lucky to be his neice, Cheryl Obde

George was a terrific person. He and I were good friends years ago when they owned the restaurant. You knew it would be a happy time when you were around George. I miss him and his sisters and brothers. Jock Swanstrom
