OLAND, Gladys Ellen "Sal"

Gladys Ellen "Sal" Oland passed away peacefully after a brief illness surrounded by family on February 9, 2018 at her daughter's home near Arkadelphia, Arkansas. Gladys was born October 14, 1919 a few miles outside Valier, Montana near Abbott Lake to Hubert Emulus Barron and Mabel Eunice Huffman. She married Earl Everett Firestone May 1, 1938, and two daughters were born to this union. She moved to Seattle in 1941, and spoke often of the wonderful summer and fall she spent there with her husband, eldest daughter, and brother. In early 1942, the family relocated to the Spokane Valley and constructed a home in an apple orchard, where she lived for 69 years.

She worked 35 years at Leo's Studio in the Spokane Valley in the darkroom. On August 4, 1956, she married Olaf Jergen "Ole" Oland, and they enjoyed nearly 55 years of marriage before his death in 2011. Following Ole's passing, she left Spokane and moved into her daughter's home in Arkansas. She spent many happy hours with her great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, brothers Virgil Barron, Hugh "Dick" Barron, and Leonard Barron, and sister Vivian Jarratt. She is survived by daughters Phyllis (Charles) Hughes and Patricia Moffitt; grandchildren Deloris Lynders, Steven (Shana) Hughes, Mary (Cleve) Jernigan, John (Teresa) Hughes, and David (Greg) Clelland; eight great-grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren; as well as one sister Dorothy Zimmerman; one sister-in-law Theresa Barron, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sal had a wonderful sense of humor and was a master storyteller. She enjoyed nothing more than having her family around. Her door was always open for family needing a place to stay, and there was always the promise of an excellent home-cooked meal or a cup of coffee. She will be greatly missed. At her request, no funeral services are planned.

Final arrangements are entrusted to THE WELCH FUNERAL HOME of ARKADELPHIA . Visit www.welchfh.net to sign the guest book.
