Hugh Johnston Obituary

JOHNSTON, Hugh Leonard III

Hugh Leonard Johnston III departed this life and was received by our Lord on March 29, 2011.

Hugh Johnston was a very diverse man who enjoyed skiing, skydiving, kayaking, jazz music, and new technologies. He was a vivacious reader who enjoyed many aspects of life.

Hugh gained his survey education at the University of Alaska Anchorage in the early 1970s. He rose through the ranks in projects such as the Trans Alaska Pipeline and continued to survey in Alaska, Florida, Pennsylvania, Oregon and California. He spent time as a Cadastral Assistant with the State of Alaska, and taught Survey at the City College level in Santa Ana California. In his 16 years working for Trimble Navigation, he worked on a myriad of projects including the construction of the Laser Interferometry Gravitational Wave Observatory, the scanning of geysers in Yellowstone Park, and the Control Survey of the Honolulu High Capacity Transit Corridor. Hugh has trained thousands of survey personnel on three continents for private, governmental, and military clients. Hundreds have taken advantage of Hugh's skill and experience in Post Processed GPS, RTK, and terrestrial training.

He leaves to cherish his memories: one loving sister, one loving soul mate, one loving son, two wonderful grandchildren, and friends around the world.

A gathering will be held at Hugh's home in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho April 8, 4-8pm.

In lieu of customary remembrances, contributions can be made in Hugh's name at his favorite charity: Feed America
