Joyce (aka: Mom, Grandma, Great Grandma, Aunt Joyce) passed away August 3rd peacefully at home surrounded by family after a long battle with Ahlzheimer's Disease. She will be loved and missed by so many.
Joyce was born to Jess and Carmel Walter on December 5, 1939 in White Sulphur Springs, Montana. She graduated Lewis and Clark High School in 1958.
Joyce is survived by the love of her life of 58 years Mel Holien; three daughters: Cheri Knox (Jerry), Terry Wall (Jeff) and Julie O'Donnell (Mark); seven grandkids: Samantha Hagedorn (Chris), Jackie Holien, Jessica Anthony (Dave), Bret Wyrick (Alicia), Amber Quick (Troy), Josh Wyrick and Ashley Toussaint; six great-grandkids: Savannah, Aidan, Maliah, Charlee, Madison and Kennedy; brothers: Bruce Walter (Claudette), Curt Walter (JoAnn) and Dale Walter (Mikki), as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Joyce is preceded in death by her mother and father, her sister Julie Reglin (Larry), her sister-in-law Carol Walter and son Doug.
She worked at Old National Bank on Garland before graduating SFCC with an Associate Degree in bookkeeping. She took classes at EWU and always managed to trek somewhere fun to get in her required tax seminars. Joyce was a savvy business owner of J.Holien Accounting, Etcetera, Escrow Unlimited, Garland Mini Storage and many others.
Joyce was an active member of the community participating in PTA (President, Golden Acorn Award, Emerson Elementary), Girl Scouts (Leader, Cookie Chairman), Compass Club, Welcome Wagon, Daughters of the American Revolution, Spokane Food Bank (Treasurer), Red Hat Society and others. She loved to play dress up and have tea parties with her grandchildren. She was an enthusiastic traveler, having traveled to all 50 states. She enjoyed reading, crafts, cooking, genealogy, sewing, herb gardening, journaling, playing Bridge, Pinochle and spoiling her grandkids.
An informal memorial will be held on Monday, August 13 at The Prospector (N. 12611 N. Division in Spokane, WA) from 9am - 11am with a burial following around noon at Greenwood Cemetery in Hunters, WA. Wear something that makes you think of Joyce. Let's celebrate her!
The family would especially like to thank Hospice of Spokane and the Family Caregiver Support Program for all their help these last 12 months.
