Joyce grew up in Buffalo where she graduated from Kensington High School in 1949. As a young adult one of her favorite leisure activities was going to the beach on Lake Erie. Joyce had a great sense of humor and enjoyed telling stories on herself about her many youthful escapades.
After high school she went on to study optical technology and graduated with a degree from what is now the Erie Community College and later earned her teaching certificate at Whitman College in Walla Walla. Joyce worked in a variety of occupations, but she treasured teaching most of all. She was a gifted teacher working many years in the Colfax and Pullman school districts receiving the most pleasure from working with special needs children.
Community involvement was important to Joyce. She was an active member of the Bluebird Shop at the Whitman Community Hospital, a longtime member of the Whitman County Historical Society, a member of the AAUW of Palouse/Garfield and a Friends of the Library member. She volunteered for many events at the Perkins House and especially enjoyed selling plants, cards etc in the original cabin behind the Perkins House during the annual ice cream social.
Joyce was a gracious and loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Her passion for the past several years has been spending her winters in Arizona with her loving companion, Dan where their favorite pastime was hunting for treasures in the many antique shops in the area. She thoroughly enjoyed a recent trip traveling in Dan's motor home throughout the United States visiting friends and relatives.
She was married to Herbert Wieckmann and they were blessed with one daughter, Mary. She later married Gordon Bryan and enjoyed operating Bryan's Antiques alongside Gordon until his death. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Samuel "Bud" Powell Jr, a sister Geri Brown; husbands Herbert Wieckmann and Gordon Bryan. Joyce is survived by longtime loving companion, Dan Hay, Tekoa, WA; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Gerry Segal, and grandchildren, Joe, Bob and Katie, Portland, OR; stepsons John and Michael Bryan, Colorado; sisters Lois Montemate and Marcia Lunetta in Buffalo, NY; and many nieces and nephews.
