Paul Weis Obituary

WEIS, Dr. Paul Lester (Ph.D. Geology) (Age 87) Passed away peacefully December 16, 2009. Born in Chicago, IL he grew up near Madison, WI. Enlisted in the Army in 1942, and commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, pilot for the Army Air Corps in 1944. He was discharged to Reserve status in October 1945. Resumed studies at the University ofWisconsin and received his PhD in Geology in 1952. He taught Geology at the University of Virginia, and subsequently went to work for the U.S. Geological Survey,assigned to the Spokane, WA office. He spent summers working as a field geologist in the Cascades, Wallowa, Oregon area, southern Idaho, and Utah. He spent several years in Kentucky and at the USGS headquarters inReston, VA, before returning to his beloved Spokane when he retired. Hewas known as the expert on the "Great Spokane Flood," and presented his flood talk to numerous groups, young and old. He built his retirement home on high ground in Spokane, so that he would be above the high water mark from that flood. He did consulting work in Mexico, and for Hanford. Paul was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting, as well ascollecting various mineral specimens, and model railroading. He frequently expressed his positions in ``letters to the editor," was always reading something and valued life-long learning. He had a great love of music, opera, theatre and the arts. Loving husband of Alice E. (French) Weis (deceased) April 27th 2009.Survivors include sister Mary Louise Sword (Clyde), nieces Lynn and Susan, nephew Paul Bradley, children Sally Seim (Brian) and Mary-JaneWeis-Hengher (Hap), grandchildren Heather Morgan (Trevor) and Keith Seim (Lillian) and great-grandchildren Kaitlyn and Hannah Morgan, and niece Heather and nephew Kirk French. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 on January 9, 2010 at MoranCemetery, (66th Ave. & South Regal) Spokane, with an open house to be held at the Weis home immediately following. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Paul's memory to the Alzheimer's Association, or theSacred Heart Providence Center of Faith & Healing. Arrangements entrusted to HAZEN & JAEGER FUNERAL HOME, 1306 N. Monroe St.

My heartfelt condolences to the family of Paul Weis.

Uncle's vast knowledge and love of communicating ideas to others, always made it a joy to see him.

He gave me someone to look up to as I grew up, and was an exemplary role model for me as a child, growing up.

Thank you for all that and more. I will never forget your memory.
