CODD, Phillip William (Age 64) Passed away suddenly on July 1, 2013. Phillip was born in Spokane, the third child of Robert J. Codd and Ceceilia A. (Dufault) Codd on November 21, 1948. He is survived by his wife, Carrie, daughter, Sara, Carrie's grown children, Madeline, David and Brian, as well as ten sisters and brothers, Sheila LeDuc, Eileen Codd, Robert Codd, William Codd, Patricia Codd-O'Neill, Kevin Codd, Nicholas Codd, Louis Codd, Paul Codd, and Therese Perry. He attended Saint Charles Elementary School, Mater Cleri Seminary High School, and Eastern Washington University. He obtained his Bachelors of Science in Nursing, and served for many years at Sacred Heart Medical Center in the Intensive Care Unit and the Emergency Department. He was highly regarded by his colleagues for his gentle and expert care of his patients, and his unflappable calm combined with a dry sense of humor. At Sacred Heart he met the love of his life and future wife, Carrie. He was a husband of great tenderness, honesty, and patience. They recently celebrated their sixteenth wedding anniversary with a grand family barbecue. Their marriage was blessed by the birth of their daughter, Sara, thirteen years ago, and to whom Phil was deeply dedicated and upon whom he lavished an abundance of fatherly love. Phillip was a caring brother to his ten siblings, both in their youth and in adulthood. When gathered together he was the first to tease, but always with an easy smile and with humor that never offended. Phil was a skilled craftsman and a gifted, self-taught artist who created many amazing woodcarvings, beautiful scrimshaw pieces, furniture and leatherwork. His latest interest was building delicate wooden boxes. For all his adult life Phil was a dedicated athlete, competing in many running, swimming, biking, and cross-country skiing events, including numerous Bloomsday runs. At the time of his sudden death, he was taking a morning jog through Riverside State Park near his home. His final moments were spent in this place he loved so much, running quiet and easy under a deep blue sky, shaded by an abundance of pines, the smell of pitch in the summer air, and the roar of the Spokane River in the distance. Alone and at peace in this paradise on earth, he went home to the paradise and peace that lasts forever. Phillip was a quiet and deep man, immensely sensitive to others, and a lover of animals, nature, and all things spiritual. As he loved so he is loved. In celebration of his life, a vigil service will be held for Phillip at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, July 9th, at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home at 5100 W. Wellesley Ave. in Spokane. The funeral Mass will be held at Saint Aloysius Church on Wednesday, July 10th, at 10:00 am. Though flowers are living expressions of love and care and are always welcome, the family asks that enduring memorials in Phillip's name be made to Active4Youth, PO Box 30501, Spokane, WA 99223-3008 or on-line at www.active4youth.org.
