Robert Eagle Obituary

EAGLE,
Robert James
"Jim"
1943-2011

Jim was born in Vancouver, British Columbia on April 4, 1943 and moved to Cranbrook when he was 4 years old. Here he developed a passion for hockey. He played on both the Midget and Juvenile Provincial Championship Teams. His success in Cranbrook elevated him to the Edmonton Oil Kings where he won a Memorial Cup in 1963. Following his junior hockey in Edmonton, Jim moved on to the University of Denver where he played for the Pioneers and graduated with a commerce degree. After university, he moved on to professional hockey in San Diego where he played for several years with the "Gulls" in the Western Hockey League. With pro-hockey behind him and living in Spokane, he entered the restaurant business. They opened the first "Chapter Eleven" in 1972. He and his partner Jim Becker expanded to 13 restaurants across the state of Washington. While growing and expanding the business, Jim moved to the "Farm" in Yakima where he found his passion for thoroughbred race horses. Jim spent the last five years in Cranbrook and continued to be involved in hockey as a scout for the Vancouver Canucks.

Jim passed away on March 10, 2011. He was predeceased by his father Bob in 1993 and his mother Hazel in 2008.

Upon Jim's request, there will be no service. A Celebration of Life will follow at a later date.

Thinking of you. Thank you again, for sharing the beauty of the Canadian Rockies, the City of Vancouver and Cranbrook with me when I visited you back in the summer of 1968, which now seems like "forever ago". Thank you for so many things Jim, but especially thank you for just being you. Love and miss you, and always will.

April 26, 2016

You would be so proud of our current hockey team, the Gulls. They are in the play-offs and of course we are all hoping they do well. The people in San Diego County are very supportive of the team, which is not surprising, because San Diego has always been a sports city....and they love their hockey.

It's winter once again, and the beautiful memories have again returned, as I remember those special times we shared in San Diego so many years ago.

I know you'd be pleased to know that San Diego once again, has a professional hockey team and they are named the Gulls! It's hard to believe that we will soon be going into another new year; another year without you. You are in my thoughts and prayers....always. Rest in peace.

It's December and I used to put my winter coat on and drive to the San Diego Sports Arena to watch you and the San Diego Gulls play an exciting game of hockey a couple of times of week. Always looked forward to the home games. There hasn't been hockey in San Diego for many, many years - no need to put on a winter coat and drive to the Sports Arena - you are no longer here with us. Memories of you are so special, especially at this time of year. Miss having your arms enfold me, and miss your wonderful smile.

December 3, 2014

It is 2014 and the holidays are almost here once again. I think of you all year long, but especially during the holidays and wintertime. It's hockey season again too. Will never forget the years you spent in San Diego playing for the San Diego Gulls Hockey Club. Lots of memories of special times spent with you.

Eagle was a great boss. I worked for the First Edition as a hostess/cocktail waitress. We were like a fun family. I roomed with Eagle's girlfriend who worked with us then in Spokane. Many fond memories. Loved Eagle and all he was.

Your spirit and the wonderful memories of your laughter, your sense of humor, your sensitivity and the warmth of your terrific smile that you shared with each of us, will continue to shine brightly in our hearts, just like the glow from this candle.

December 27, 2012

It's hard to believe that it is almost 2013. Still miss those great hockey games you played at the San Diego Sports Arena. Nothing seemed the same after you left for Spokane, but glad that you got to realize and experience your dreams. We all wish you were still here. I'm just glad I had the opportunity to know and love you. Until we meet again.

A smile, a glance...you looked my way,
Here in California, I'd hoped you'd stay.
The Pacific Northwest called your name,
Restaurants and Thoroughbreds, brought you fame.
A man with visions for new things, new trends,
Who will live forever in the hearts of his friends.

I knew Jim when he played hockey for the San Diego Gulls from 1968 until 1971. I loved him...what can I say. We all did. Jim traveled to the beat of his own drum, and all of us who knew and loved him, admired him for his independence, sense of humor and his intelligence. What a great business man he turned out to be as well. I am so proud of his accomplishments and I will never forget him. Thank you Jim, for the wonderful memories. May you rest in peace my friend.

I worked initially for Jim(Eagle&Becker)at the Chapter X1 First Edition in the Spokane valley, then at the original restaurant on Mission.I would go on to manage their next effort(who they partnered with Jim Flaherty)the entertainment venue, Sherman Street South in Spokane and then witness a statewide expansion like no other.A colossal success at the time featuring huge portions of Prime Rib,Steaks,Seafood and all you can eat salad bars. The crowds were unbelievable.Jim Eagle was a huge talent and visionary in the business. To know Jim(you know what I mean)was to love him and I loved him like a brother.Never forgotten.RIP my friend.Pat Wheeler (wheels)
