Roger Blum Obituary

BLUM, Roger James

June 3, 2011 Roger James Blum left us to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and to join the love of his life, his beloved wife of 59 years, Ruth, who preceded him in death on July 20, 2010.
Roger was born to Ethel and Wesley Blum in Cedar Falls, Iowa on September 9, 1931. He was preceded in death by sisters Caroline Johnson and Ethel Abkes, and brothers Harold, Billy and Wesley Jr. He is survived by one brother, Robert Blum. Roger lied about his age to join the United States Air Force where served proudly for 24 years. He served in Saudi Arabia, Spain, Italy, France, Morocco and the Vietnam conflict. When he retired from military service, he went to work for the USPS in Airway Heights, WA for 20 years. Roger also volunteered to set up and organize the Post Office at the Airway Heights Correctional Facility. During this time period, he also drove the shuttle van for the VA hospital. Roger's passion was the Strategic Air Command Unit and working with the B-52's. He received the "Good Conduct Medal" and several Good Conduct Ribbons. He received the "Gold Award Certificate of Appreciation" from the Airway Heights Correctional Facility. Roger also received an "Achievement Award" from the USPS and logged more than 11,000 volunteer hours with the DAV.
Roger was dedicated to his country and his family. Daughters, Debra Lenius, Patricia Cruz (José), and son Robert Blum (Theresa). He had three children, nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 3.5 great-great-grandchildren. In his failing health he was graciously cared for by his devoted granddaughter Penny Delaney. Roger would have loved to say "Good-Bye" and "Thank You" to all of his good friends at Northern Quest Casino for their kindness, friendship and generosity. He was a man among men who never questioned anyone's integrity and saw the good in all.
On June 10, 2011, there will be an Honor Guard Ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Medical Lake, WA at 2:15 pm followed by a Memorial Service at the First Church of the Nazarene at 2 pm Saturday June 11, 2011. Please join us to honor Blum's life. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society or the VA Hospital.

You will always be in our hearts forever. Tell Mom and Pollie that we love and miss them every day. You were the solid rock of our family, the one we looked up to and respected. I hope you know how much you were loved by family and cherished by so many friends. There was only one like you, and we were so blessed and proud to have been able to call you our father. So long for now, (as you said in your own words), we will never stop missing you. We love you so much!! Your daughter, Debbie and son, Robert
