Ronald Jackson Obituary

JACKSON, Ronald A. "Ron"
(Age 83)

Ron fought a valiant 14 year battle against Parkinson's Disease, which ended Thursday evening, April 28. Born in Oakland California, he lived in Spokane Valley for 55 years.
Ron played professional baseball for several years including the Spokane Indians in 1956. His double-play record still stands. His baseball career was interrupted by the Korean War where he was a decorated combat veteran. Ron coached American Legion baseball for 24 years. He assistant coached at EWU and spent several years coaching the little guys with wife Sally.
He was a scout master for 13 years, played recreation league basketball and softball until age 70, raced horses at Playfair, built and owned the Jackson Hole Tavern, and taught swimming with Sally when he retired from driving/delivering for Wonder Bread. Ron was a life-long democrat who ran for the State Legislator.
Ron is survived by Sally, his loving wife of nearly 56 years; his treasured sons Rick, Mick, Tim, Andy, and Casey; his beloved daughters Debby Hollinsworth and Sally Jo Amundson; and his 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren are his pride and joy. Watching their sports and activities, as well as those of his much loved 55 nieces, nephews, great and great-great, gave him absolute joy.
Ron was "Papa" to so very very many, among them his pinochle group, his little Julie, Kay McGlocklin and her boys, the Bagwell clan, and numerous foster kids. If friends are a sign of wealth, Ron Jackson was the richest man in Spokane.
His memorial will be held at the Spokane Indian's Avista Stadium, Thursday, May 5th at 11:00am. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ron's name to the Spokane Valley Girls Softball League.

I had the privilege of knowing Ron when I coached the Wallace-Colville Motor Freight American Legion team from 1978-83. Ron was an awesome coach and a fierce competitor. A win against his Appleway Chevrolet team was always very special because you knew you had beaten "the best". My condolences to his family.

So sorry to hear about Ron's passing. I know he is playing ball in that big stadium up high. He had such an impact on everyone he came in contact with. I remember when my brothers played ball for him how much they admired him. Their house was the one house in the neighborhood every child went to first because they had the BEST treats! All 3 of my children and some of my foster kids took lessons there. They didn't charge me for the foster kids because they wanted to help them and didn't even know them. Ron say "Hi" to my dad and mom for me. They will be thrilled to see you again. They loved you as much as the rest of our family.

My condolences to Sally and the kids as I am sure they feel a great loss. so many fond memories of staying at the Jackson's - even though I was the only girl (before Sally Jo) - so many many years ago! Ron worked with my Dad at Wonder Bread and he and Sal were favorites of my parents. My parents have been gone a long time and my brother Bob for 4 years now, but my brothers Tim and Mick (familiar names?) share my memories. As Mick said, Ron had the original "field of dreams" and Tim remembers swimming in the pool and Sal making sure we were all taken care of. My grandfather was president of the Indians way back in the 50's (and GM at Wonder Bread), so I like to think that there is a Wonder Bread team somewhere in Heaven welcoming Ron to the team!

Uncle Ron, you welcomed us into your family many years ago. You treated us the same way you treated your own children. You laughed and joked with me and made me feel welcome and allowed me to always be myself. I will miss your smile and that little twinkle in your eyes! Love you forever, your niece Rosa
