Suzanne MacGillivray Obituary

MacGILLIVRAY, Suzanne (Troyer)

Passed away on April 30, 2011 after a lengthy illness. She was born on August 17, 1924, the daughter of Fanny Gregory and Mervyn Troyer. She grew up in Seattle attending West Queen Anne Elementary School and Queen Anne High School. In 1946 Suzanne graduated in Art History from the University of Washington where she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She was a June bride marrying Donald K. MacGillivray shortly after graduation. They honeymooned at Pebble Beach and then moved to Don's hometown of Spokane where she would reside for the next 65 years. Suzanne had six children, the first of which was born in 1947. She was a typical housewife of a bygone era. The doors to the house were never locked as she always welcomed her children's friends. She participated in her children's activities as well as various sports. Some of her favorite activities were piling the kids into the car and heading for the lake in the summer and the ski slopes in the winter. She also loved golfing with Don. Volunteering with the Junior League kept Suzanne busy as well. Through the years, she never lost her interest in art as she continued to paint portraits and landscapes. She brought a creative presence to her family's lives. She also influenced her husband's creative and innovative home designs, several of which won national awards. Being married to a home builder, designer and a real estate developer she resided in many different South Hill homes; one of which was featured in Town & Country magazine. After her husband's passing in 1983 and her last child graduated from college, she followed in her husband's footsteps and began a successful 18 year real estate career working for Tomlinson Real Estate. She enjoyed the challenges, meeting new clients and driving around looking at houses with her little white poodle, "Peaches." Mom lived each day with joy and enthusiasm. We miss her as she has left us for a new adventure. She will be in our hearts forever. Suzanne is survived by her children Heather Haverfield of Whidbey Island, Scott (Maude) of Los Angeles, Andrew (Cathy) of Spokane, Don of Seattle and Ian of Santa Monica. She also has four grandchildren Drew, Brianna, Graham and Connor. She was preceded in death by her husband Donald in 1983, daughter Heidi in 2008 and sister Hope Troyer in 2011. A Memorial Service will be held at St. John's Cathedral, Grand Blvd. at 12th Ave, on Friday May 20, 2011 at 4:00PM. Donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
